Can someone sort this printer argument for me??

Right, I have a MacBook Pro, my dad has his desktop computer (running Windows XP, or whatever).

My dad seems to think that if I plug the Printer into my MBP, it will "upgrade" the hardware in the printer, meaning that it will no longer work on his PC (because you cant downgrade the software once it has been updated).

He seems to think that this is why the last Printer broke. As he was running XP and my old laptop was running Vista. He seems to think that me plugging it into my old laptop updated the hardware in the printer, causing it to not work with my dads computer anymore.

Please tell me that he is talking absolute bullshit, and provide links if possible so that I can prove him wrong, so that I can finally print out stuff that I need (without having to email across, go on his computer and print that way).

Just take his computer away from him TBH. It is the only safe option left.

Does he wear tinfoil hats too?

He is a strange one (I think I was adopted tbh)...
This is an argument that has been going on for a ridiculous amount of time now, its not even funny any more! Ive just never really bothered too much as its technically his printer (well, kind of the family printer, although im the only one that ever uses it), but now im in the busiest time of my university stint and will be printing out loads of stuff, I cant be dealing with his idiocy.

i work in IT. trust me. he hasnt got a clue. does he think little mice run around inside his pc making it work? and that sending an email just notifies royal mail and they go on their way with a letter?

Just buy a new printer?

It's his printer, that he paid for, if he doesn't want to risk you 'breaking' it, then don't use it.

cheap printer = expensive ink. (normally)

Clear cut ratio there. The more expensive the machine, the cheaper it is to print - and vice versa. Mind you, in a three month period at work, we did 32,000+ colour prints and that knocked on the door of £2.9k. Ouch.

OP - glad you convinced the old man that you were right all along - lol. :)

Yup, although he's still adamant that my old laptop 'broke' the old printer, due to the above reason of it updating the hardware so that it wouldnt work on his computer. LOL, just LOL.
He just cant accept that he's wrong.

Updated the hardware means physically changing the printer.

For some reason I don't think Steve Jobs has implemented any sort of Mac that can use a screwdriver never mind "Update the hardware of a printer"

Also, dig out the printer box as usually on the side of it, it will state for PC & MAC use

I'd of just added the printer to the mac through printer sharing, then he doesn't have to know :)

In my last job I looked at our print costs and changed from a massive HP laserjet thing (needed 2 people to lift lol) to a big full on photocopier thingy, the initial outlay was massive but as long as they kept up the amount they printed then they were looking at saving a mint.

Although not long after that the company took a turn for the worse and they probably didn't realise the savings. I felt a bit bad but I had no idea it was coming and was the first one to get a new job anyway :D
