can someone tell me what these loom connections are for?

  '92 172, Lotus Elise
next up in my never ending list of 172 questions ;)

I'm trying to thin down my loom to fit to the mk1, so need to get rid of anything that wont be used in the mk1

I have a few loom connectors that I'm not sure of

1st is the 3pin connector that branches off where the starter motor connectors are and the 2 lambdas are (not the CTS)

2nd, Can i ditch the 2nd lambda (longer cable) all together as I've heard its not needed? or should i really get another lamda welded into my exhaust (not running a cat and its a mk1 dash, so no emissions light)

3rd, there is a connector that ends up by the engine mount (near the cambelt cover) - comes off the same bit of loom as the injectors and the map sensor etc... but can't find anywhere for it to plug in to

cheers! :D

third one is the carbon canister, bout as far as my memory goes though im afraid lol.

ah cool, the mk1 charcoal canister has no such connection, so off it comes! :D

the first one sounds like the abs connector, but i haven't been near a clio for 6months, so can't remember LOL

the first and 3rd plugs were the ones i asked burp about, he wasnt sure on the one near the starter but said the long one near the engine mount is the carbon cannister :) (as ditz has said)

speedo sensor? the phase 1's are mechanical speedo drive so what does this do?

and my loom is a very early type with no uch connector so there is no chance it is a later loom with speedo running off abs

i thought we dispelled the UCH myth? it just can be unplugged

yeh you proved it can be unplugged, but with your loom there is a chance it is a later loom where the speedo runs off the abs. whereas mine is a proper early type loom that didnt come with a uch connector at all (meaning the loom is 100% for use with a car with mechanical speedo), but i still have the 3 pin connector around the starter area

i have a feeling it is for abs

speedo sensor,

it will be the connector that hooks up to the sensor into the back of the box

so all looms have this connector even if the car has mechanical speedo drive as standard?

not the same 'manual' as a mk1 though? where its a big cable the connects directly to the clocks through the bulkhead..

not, psh1 172 were built after dinosaurs,

the Speedo drive is mechanical but its converts to a electric signal for the clocks and speed input for the ECU

sorted it is for the speedo sensor, but seeing as we have to take that sensor out to put the prehistoric mechanical one in we cant use it

:D

confusion came from all these mk2 lads thinking that 'electrical' meant 'mechanical'

:D :D

*chops out of loom*

I am, yes

does it need to know the road speed?

wont it just affect the limiter?

unless you want to find out the PPM value and convert an ABS sensor output to simulate it and feed the ecu this modified signal.
