Car sounds fuked

  HBT 172 Cup
Yeah you've spun a bearing. Im guessing as you didn't know that, you dont have the knowledge to rebuild the engine, which means start looking for a new engine!! :(

Which bearings? I have no clue about engines at all really... So I probably shouldn't drive it anymore ey.. Nightmare!!

Anyone got one they want to fit for me :)

Never mind.. Probably time to move on..

Knew this car would screw me one day.. It's been so good for the last two years. Only had belts done 14k ago

Don't move on, just get a new engine dropped in it! All the specialists can do it!

Drop a new engine in, can pick one up for £300. If you do put a new engine in then get all the belts and everything done, as the engine is out it will only cost you parts.

I'm just thinking of the money right now though, it's due tax this month as well.. Needs a new tyre.. Plus parts labour..

I'm going to make a decision tonight, had an offer of cash for it and also a part ex with a friend.. See how it goes

Andy, i'd actually have it diagnosed before you do anything mate! An hour's labour or so is nothing to lose to find out if it is royally fecked!

Got my mechanic coming round later to have a look see.. He does all the work on my cars.. Should hopefully give me an idea which direction I take

When it sounds that bad the crank is damaged. You could put another set of shells in it but it'll start knocking again in Xk miles.

Right now this is a genuine question.......

Bearings spin, so how is a spun bearing f**ked?

They don't spin, they're two semicircular strips of metal which lock into place in the big end of each conrod. If one or both becomes detached, and spins, then it f**ks the crankshaft + Conrod

Definitely bottom end (bearing) failure. Sounds exactly like mine did last year. Unless you know someone who can rebuild it for you, I'd suggest breaking the car and moving on. I've spent a small fortune getting mine back on the road only for the gearbox to go only a few months later.

Yep my mechanic friend has confirmed it. It's going... Had an offer just see how that pans out over the weekend.. If I had a drive way I would break it.. I can't be arsed trying to fix it, I don't have the spare money or the time plus I will never trust it again..

Stop gap for six months then I'm fulfilling a dream or owning either an Evo V - VIII any of them models i love or a Focus RS..

Our sounded the same when an injector became blocked and was only running on 3. BTW a mechanic told us it had dropped a valve.

I checked injectors, one was bronzed compared to 3 silvers. Changed the rail with some new injectors and sorted.

Feel really bad you you

So what is the cause of this then? Poor looking after of car by previous owner? Ragging when cold? Oil starv? Etc.Or is it just pure bad luck?

I always warm it up, it was due a service but only just.. Belts done 16k ago and full service.. It took some stick but only on occasions.. But it had just had some stick before it happened.

Had a few responses in other places saying dephazer pully could have gone? Is this possible I know everyone had said big end and I don't doubt your knowledge but I'm just exploring avenues..

Thanks for responses so far..

You've had several people in this thread tell you what the problem is.

It is not the dephaser pulley, it is not an injector.

I was just asking if it was an option.. Read my post properly.
I just want to be sure before I let it go

You can hear two noises, one does sounds a bit like a dephaser, but then the knocking starts, and its this im guessing is the bearing being spun.

Wishful thinking if anything else, Iv just done a engine due to worn rings, find a cheap second hand engine with a good history, will be cheaper than rebuilding that's for sure.

Yea I've been scouring YouTube.. Dephaser sounds a lot more like a rattle and bearings a deep knock.. Which this is.. But they all have the knock on idle and mine doesn't unless it's just not progressed as far.. I don't know I'm not an expert.. Just asking questions and exploring avenues.. Like you say probably wishful thinking.. Don't want to lose it but I canny afford to fix it.. Holiday in two weeks and a kitchen and living room being decorated and need paying for :(

100% that's a big end. It's a very distinct noise. Every one I've heard sounds just like that. If you knew what you were doing it could be fixed with second hand rods and crank for not that much money.

Cheers pal.. I'm pretty convinced I've been watching YouTube and listening to them and your right it's a very distinct noise... Just wanted to be sure before I let it go.. Not got the time or cash to fix it so its got to go unfortunately..

Could some kind person enlighten me and tell me what a dephaser pully is and what it does? I've been asking about it and I've just realised I don't actually know what it is?

Something to do with cam belt?
