Car starting and then killing itself.

  Megane 225 F1
It happened yesterday, and I thought that it could be because the car had been sat in the freezing weather for 4 days, unused.

But then I got in it this morning and it was fine, went and did the shopping, got back to the house, took shopping inside and then went to start it up to park up and it happened again.

Turn key, starts up, revs and then kills itself and turns off. Does this twice. Third time it started up, I revv'd the b****cks off of it, and it as fine.

What's the issue here?

My neighbour came out to see why I was making so much noise. Decat FTW

mine has done this once. it started revving and then just cut out but if i revved it myself then it stayed on. assuming its a starter motor issue or something similar (not a mechanic) or its not picking up enough fuel.

Possible Tdc sensor, throttle pedal or throttle body fault.

Get it CLIPd.

I had this with the rb.

That's exactly what it's doing. If we are having to revv it ourself, maybe throttle body related?

CLIPd?

I work at a dealership where I've driven many old Renaults that do exactly what you're describing, usually a quick lock/unlock of the remote central locking and the car starts fine.

Just a suggestion as technically I know jack sh*t lol.

just spoke to my friend who had this problem. said it was the fuel pump not priming properly (thinks thats what he said)

Fuel pump a serious job?

true mate. Get it on diagnostic, but something sounds like it's on the blink.

Relay maybe?

Would a K-tec fault finder thingy work?

clean the throttle body just done this to cure a 1.6 16v vvt that was cutting out when cold its a free fix so worth trying before paying for any diagnostics

Cheers mate, I'l give that a try at the weekend.

If it was immobiliser fault, the car wouldn't start at all though.

Not necessarily, if the immobiliser sends back a false signal it will not work. if it sends back no signal it will start then fail within a few seconds, happened to my car so we kept trying and revving til it worked

Clip is Renault diagnostics tool. Ktec one should do too.

Mine came up with throttle potentiometer fault.

However it also did it when on idle in traffic.

Cheers mate. I know someone with a Ktec one. I'l give him a shout. He needs to turn my engine management light off anyway (Decat)

My rstuner should be coming back to me soon if u need it.

You can't put the emissions light off dude. It'll come back on in a few days!

Which bit is the ICV?

I thought you could turn the light off? Oh well. I'm trying to get hold of ashs but if that falls through I'l drop you a pm mate.

Haven't tried anything yet  but the car starts first time everytime now so it seems to have fixed itself :) I think it was just the cold.

Happened again. Will be giving the TB a good clean in the next few weeks.

This time after it killed itself for the 3rd time, it wouldn't turn over and then after trying to bump start it the battery died. Had to jump start it and now fires up perfectly. PITA.
