car struggling to start

Its doing it more and more frequently now.
When you turn the key it will make the ticking noise, but the engine wont start.
I'll try it again and sometimes nothing, I have to give it revs when I turn the key to eventually start it.
what could be the problem?

Flat battery?

Don't know about the 2.0 but on the 1.2, it could be a faulty TDC sensor.

Does the immobiliser light flash in sequence?
