cat converter

My 172 has been rattling so i took it in and they reckon the cat converter is going and spitting out little pieces of metal into the exhaust, sounds worrying. Anyway, does anybody know whether this will this effect the performance of the car and the MPGs?

pm roamer - he had exactly the same problem with his williams, he will tell you anything you may need to know about the performance

the particles of cat could potentially block the exhaust silencers up and cause a significant decrease in power.in some cases it can cause the engine to cut out due to the restiction in the exhaust causes it to choke itself up.
