CDR Recommendations & Question

  Punto/Clio GTT
Hey, need a 100 spool of cdr's and just wondered what everyone uses, any problems, any bad discs, if so how many.

Just need 100 on the spool, 80 minutes.

Also, ive had a look on some websites and the disc limit is either 700mb or 702mb, if i burn a film to this cdr, will it compress it to fit on the cd? or do i need say an 800mb disc?

cheers

You can "overburn" the CD but not by much. Best way would be to compress the film using VCD or SVCD :)

ah, i dont really wanna be converting anything or compressing, is there 700mb discs and 800mb discs? as most my films are between 700 and 750mb

There was a fad for a while with 90 and 99 minute discs. I haven't seen many recently though as I think most people would just use a DVD given the cost.

You can get an 800Mb MPEG onto a CD using VCD. VCDs use Mode 2 recording which means there isn't much error correcting data so more more room for actual data. I think most people would just use DivX/Xvid as (S)VCD does not really offer much in the way of quality.

I would spend an extra few pennies and get some decent discs. Good makes inlcude Tayo Yuden (The like of Fuji etc), Mitsubishi Chemicals (Verbatim). Check out www.svp.co.uk, they tell you the manufacturer as well as the brand. Plus they are doing £10 off if you pay by Google Checkout :)

thanks for the reply

quick questiuon, usually when i burn, i dont mess with any options i basically just burn the file. you say use divx/xvid or maybe vcd. do i just burn as an xvid, or burn as a vcd. say if i got Jackass.avi, so i just burn it and set the options to xvid/divx or does it need to be converted or something?

cheers

Depends, if you want to play it on a PC or a DivX/Xvid capable DVD player then create a normal data disc and just drag the file on. If you are playing on a normal DVD player you will probably have to create a VCD or DVD disc, in which case you will need to do some sort of conversion. Depending on the burning app this might be done automatically for you.

just buy a dvdrw if ya aint got one there cheap enough + if ya confident enough u could add 2 movies per disc depending on the encoding

Well you can try 90/99 minute CDs, but the compatibility of these discs is variable. I would just stick it on a DVD for the sake of easyness. You could also look at snipping the credits off the end to save a few MB.

ok found these, theyve got brilliant reviews, so next question, what size dvd is this?

http://svp.co.uk/products-solo.php?pid=1819#reviews

say a 80 minute 700mb cdr will hold 1 film, do these hold like 3 or 4 films per disc?

can u burn onto a dvd an .avi or an .mpeg or do they need converting first?

sorry for these newbie questions but ive never really burnt using dvd only cd

DVDs hold 4.3Gb if they're single sided so you should get 6 if they're 700mb, dont bother with the dual layer 9gb ones, they're still expensive IIRC.

Yes you can still burn them as avi's or mpegs no probs.

Those SVC ones are single sided, but say 4.7gb - I always thought single were 4.3gb, could quite easily be wrong though, im old and I forget stuff ;)

ok cheers mate. also, if i burn 6 films to 1 dvd, do i need to seperate them or add anyting to the burn for the dvd player to recognise, or isit just a straight burn the 6 an dthe dvd player will select them automatically, like recognise the 6 things

  Punto/Clio GTT
see i always thought dvd discs you had to convert to dvd format to burn onto them, never knew you could just burn straight onto them. dvd's it is then lol

  Punto/Clio GTT
hmm ok problem

when i open nero and try make a vcd, the film i put in is too big for the 700mb disc

when i try make a data cd its just crashing when i click select files

tryin to right click the file and send it to the rw drive but it aint in the list
