i havent got a clamp or anyhting and thought id read on here that you could disconnect the brake fluid pipe to do it?

  Ph-Sold!

Just use the flat side of a spanner across the piston and push on either end, no need to disconnect anything otherwise youre just making yourself work!

do you have to take the cap off the brake fluid reservoir when doing this ?

Yep.
You can do it with your hands if your not a wimp (I use a G clamp)
