Changing oil seal *help*

  Tungy
Changing the front crankshaft oil seal (gearbox end) on a valver. Only just put the engine back in. Changed the seal already whilst clutch and gearbox were off. After finnally running the engine the other night with the car sat on the drive. Noticed after about 10 mins of running a large oil patch on the driveway about 8x8cm and dripping about every 10 seconds from around the gearbox/engine area.

Can only guess it's the seal again? Dodgy seal/caught lip whilst fitting or something. How much work is it to change it again? Do I need to take the engine back out to get the gearbox and clutch far enough off to get to the seal? Can replacement seals be bought from Renault? Don't want to take chances second time round!

Ermmm. Got the oil seal today from Renault. Fits in tight btu it's not as wide as the old one. Need confirmation it's the right one! ANyone changed one before? Know the dimensions of the seal? It is acctually the rear crankshaft oil seal. One at the gearbox end.

Well this is a bit of a guess,a s my dad put it on, and before I ahd chance to look at what he meant... he ahd put the flywheel back on. I think he meants the lip sits tight against the crank, and outer edge to the block, however the depth isn't ass deep as the original seal, meaning it's recessed a little? Not entirely sure as I didnt see it! But I think this is what he's getting at.

You dont push it in as deep as it'll go, it should sit flush with the face. If its recessed there is a high change it'll leak again.

The seal should be tight into the block, and tight against the crank......its there to seal.

as abov, remove cluch and fly to expose seal. use picks to remove the old one, or drill two small opposite holes in the seal body and screw in some self tappers and pull it out.

It will have been pushed in too far.

Bump to an old thread. After the oil seal leaked again I am having another attempt at sorting it as I've had to remove the engine to replace the gearbox anyway. Here's some pics. I think I can answer our own wrong doings. As the seal wasn't as deep as the original my dad knocked it all they way back and we reckon that the lip slotted into the groove and it wasn't meant to.

Basically I jsut want some assurance on how to do it right by people who've done this before. First time it failed with a crappy cheap seal from Panjetani's and second time it failed on the Genuine Renault seal. The seal did seem to come out very easily with a screwdriver though, didn't really seem tight enough. So I just want to know if my theory is right before I go and blow another £18 odd on a seal and put it all back together.

Thanks, Brad

yup, it should sit just about flush with the face of the blocks machined surface, knocking it right back will gaurantee a leak.
