Changing Pads on a DCi Clio



I may have to change the pads on my brothers dci 65bhp clio tomorrow and have never done brakes before. So can anyone give me a good runthrough of what to do? as i dont want anything going wrong.

This is what i found in a search (it is for a 1.2 16v though):

easy peasy

you need a 13mm and a 17mm spanner

you'll see 2 x 13mm bolt of the back on the caliper, undo the lower one (you have to hold the inside on the slider pin with the 17mm spanner)

lift the caliper up, pull out the old pads

remove master cylinder cap

push pistons back in

wack in new pads

job done

(don't forget to pump the pedal before driving it!)

But what does "you have to hold the inside on the slider pin with the 17mm spanner" mean? IS the slider pin the bolt or piston or what?

And how do i push the pistons back in? they dont need a tool to wind them in do you? or do i just push it in with a screwdriver or similar?

And finally, do halfords sell pads other than their own brand? I dont want to have to put in s**t halfords pads but its the only motorfactors open tomorrow and the car must be done ASAP, it cannot wait until monday.

Use the Ferrodo FDB 845 pads from Halfords I used them and they were great only very serious track work killed them and that was Bedford no other track killed them.

When you take the wheel off you'll understand whats going on you need to hold the inside bolt with a spanner. If you try and undo the bolt on the outside you'll see what I mean as the inside bolt spins.
Pushg the piston back in either with a spanner accross it and with your hands or a G clamp. Just make sure you push it back slowly and that you pist it back evenly.

Done today. It was as easy as pie. Thanks for your help eddie.

BUT only 1 pad had worn right back to the metal, the passenger side inner pad, the rest were about 2/3 worn. What has caused this?

When fitting the new pads, putting the one into the space for the passenger side inner was a tighter fit than the rest. :? Any idea's?

Sounds like the siders a bit stuck. You know the thing you put your spanner on to stop it spinning when you undid the caliper well it goes in and out sound like your is a bit stuck so when you brake all the pressure is being aplied to you inside pad. Its not diffuclt to fi take the caliper off pull the slider bit off cover it in grease and put it back on making sure you get no grease anywhere else on the brakes just under the slider the rubber cover is there to stop the grease getting out.
 
Well then that is the problem, the rubber bit was off at one end, i guess the grease all got out like what happens cv boots.

I didnt have and couldnt get any copper grease so i used lithium grease on the backs of the pads when fitting. Would this cause any problems? and should i be using any special grease on these sliders?
