Cheap Sterio Improvements?

  172 (sold), Elise,
New 2001 172 bought with standard CD player and changer.

I want to be able to use my Ipod and really want some better quality but I don't have much to spend on this.

I know you can get an Ipod wire for the standard stereo but is the standard stereo any good?

I don't want anything 'invasive' ie huge sub or huge amp but was thinking of souring an Alpine Ipod headunit and then some speakers and an amp from fleabay.

Any suggested set-ups? I'm fairly handy at installing things but want a standard look (apart from HU)

Assume there is room for an amp under the pass seat?

Are there any hidden places to put a sub – I was considering ditching the spare wheel if ness.

What size speakers can I fit – happy to build frames etc if its worth it!

Help appreciated people

People are going to recommend that if you want to amp your speakers you may as well get a new HU, as you'll get lower quality from the original.

Remember though, if you get a new HU then you'll need to get a stalk adapter, Im sure MT_AUDIO will fill you in on this when he sees the thread. He'll also give some good recommendations.

You can fit 6.5"'s in the front doors, which is obviously worth while as they sound far better than 5.25"'s. Someone here has already done it and posted a guide here - http://www.cliosport.net/forum/showthread.php?t=310984

  172 (sold), Elise,
Just noticed my title spelling – such an amateur!! Cannot seem to edit my post though?

I saw the thread on fitting 6.5 inch- sounds good to me – will these be sufficient for me to not bother with a hidden sub? I assume these would be used with tweeters in the dash?

Lots of amps on ebay – any make/type recommendations? I’m going for quality rather than monstrously loud. Initially searched for a JBL one – 4 way 75w going for about £40 which I thought sounds OK.

Not quite sure how to find out what is good and bad – was considering buying ‘what car hi-hi’ type of magazine and then looking for well rated ones on ebay – good plan?

You can get the Alpine ipod HU cheap so leaning towards one of those at the mo.

Keep advice coming people

Re: Cheap Stereo Improvements?

More questions!

I have a sort of ‘pub level’ of knowledge on car audio.

I was under the impression that it is not ‘acoustically correct’ to have 4 speakers and was considering concentrating on the front set up and saving my cash and ditching rear speakers (could even take them out under the guise of weight saving!)

Am I right?

I understand that a sub will deliver parts of sound that normal speakers cannot but is a hidden setup or the all in ones worse quality than not having one at all?

it is again all depend on your budget. But with low one concentrate on good front quality components speakers. For a sub : a decent size would be 10" or 12" don't go bigger. AMps wise stick to brand that you know : alpine, JL, ...

Trying to avoid carrying a sub around if possible - hence question about bass delivery of 6.5inch speakers.

Let the ebay search begin!

Be interested in seeing this - are they active or passive? Do you have a link?

Is there anything decent (and cheap) you can do with the spare wheel gap?

So do you recommend a sub of some type, mids in the doors and tweeters up top.

I assume I would need 'frequency cut off' to separate sound.

Hanging on by the skin of my teeth knowledge wise!

underseat subs will never give it out as much bass as what a normal sub would, most ar no bigger than 8" and obviously size limits the cubic feet of the box

some head units allow you to set a min and max level of bass or treble coming through the speakers so you can focus the sub on the bass and the sub only.
