Checking Oil

Should the engine be at normal running temperature before checking the oil level ?

Erm AFAIK no, check it when its cold and on a level surface, running the engine moves the oil round the engine and will result in a low oil reading (Erm if Im wrong Im wrong)

Thanks Roamer. Ill let you know the results in about 3 hours ( when I find the dipstick hole )

Nope!

If the cars been driven then it should really be sat on level ground for at least an hour before checking the level, ideally its best to do it cold when all the oil has run into the sump.

AFAIK, it is actually best to run the oil up to temp, and check about a minute or two after switching the engine off.

it doesnt have to be stone cold.

a few mins after any running is fine.

You dont need to know the last ml of oil....

best to check it when its been stood for a while and the engine is cold.

If its not stone cold then use your noggin, dont fill it to the maximum! Simple!
