Chipped windscreen

  Porsche Boxster987S
Driving home from glasgow on the motor way in reasonably heavy traffic and lots of spray off the roads etc , when the car infront makes a gap of maybe 5 car lengths. So i started to build up speed when the car infront either kicked up a mudflap or his came off and it came straight towards the car hitting it full force on the top right of the screen.

I was f**king fumin / shaken by it so pulled over to the hard shoulder to have a check. It has scuffed the windscreen and left like a crystal effect where it has hit leaving around 10 small chips. Also its bent the rubber seal round the window , but thankfully missed the paint.

Will this cause the screen to crack??? And how does this work regarding insurance??:dapprove:

usually insurance with windscreen cover is great matey

go to any chip removal, autoglass, will do it thru your insurance for you

your insurance would rather pay for the chip to be removed, than pay for your whole screen when it eventually goes due to the chip

as easy as that?? never had this kind of thing happen before.:(

do you reckon it would eventually crack then??

I had a huge stone chip on my windscreen that started to crack... Called the insurance company who gave me a tel no for autoglass, paid the £60 excess and had a new windscreen fitted.. It doesnt affect your policy either..

If its just like a small indentation on the windscreen surface, then its no real issue.

If there is a crack, it has to be less than the size of a 5p piece for them to be able to fill it in. You will still notice the blemish, but better than paying the excess for a new screen, I've had both in the years of ownership of the Cup.

It doesn't affect your no claims bonus, but they can use it so as not to lower your premium when you come to renew with the same company (Hastings tried it with me...gits!)

Well if you've never had it happen before things are just becoming even! I've had to replace a few...

I have had a huge crack in my screen for months, if you're bothered about the £50/£60 excess then save up for a couple of months then get it done, your screen won't fall out in the meantime ;)

Try to always demand an OEM replacement screen.

Nothing to worry about.
I've got two or three small chips on my window, rang up Bell and they sent out National Windscreens the next day.
Guy said they are harmless and even if they crack the window is still fine to drive with so i just told him to leave it as the chip is right in my line of vision and would still have been noticeable with the "repair" so when i get the time just going to get them to put in a nice new windscreen for the sake of £50.

Im with elephant, same group as bell. Call autoglass and they will come to you and repair it free of charge. All they need to know is roughly what the damage is like, your name and your insurance company, and when/where they can meet you. They do the rest. They have a good website that explains the process they use and whether or not they can repair your damage. You can also book a ring back from autoglass on the site with a preffered time for repair. If by sheer bad luck you need to have the windscreen replaced, the excess is between £70 and £120 usually. None of this effects your insurance in any way and you will not have to inform any previous insurance companies about it in the future. You can also use the windscreen insurance cover as many times as you like.
