christmas nightmare

driving on the a470 home on x.mas eve droped the box from 5th to 4th, lost all power in the car, car cut out and stalled, at first thought it was the cam belt, didnt try to restat it incase, rang the rac, after a 2 hour wait the r.a.c came, took the rocker cover thing off and the oil cap, looked behind the engine and said cam belts still in tact, told me to try the engine, i did and it wouldnt start but he could see the top of the cam belt turning, when starting it it sounds like theres no petrol in the tank followed by a clunking noise.. rac guy seems to think maybe the cam belt has slipped and hasnt lined back up properly, spoke to a few and a few diffrent things have came up some think maybe the ecu has triped out or the alternator has blow due to my sounds system, some a bearing has blown, ect..
when it happend i didnt have a bang or nor was there smoke just the engine cut out, no management lights are on, im baffled, although a week ago i got in the car and when i turned the key nothing happend, as if i had a flat battery, tryed it again and bomp started up, i just put it down to a loose connection... any ides?? or any one know for a good garage near merthyr tydfil? could possibly tow the car to a tidy garage further away...

i'm sure you would have noticed, but i'm going to embarrass myself by asking - assume it's not stuck in gear?

as chance would have it, my gearbox failed last x-mas eve and gave similar sounding symptoms as the engine couldn't be started unless the clutch was in

otherwise, i think there are bunch of sensors that could cause similar non start problems - TDC sensor? might be worth searching unless someone comes along

anyway, can sympathise with the timing that you're suffering

Check your fuse box. our car lost all drive one night. turned out it had blown a 30AMP fuse for the fuel pump there fore no fuel and would not start ect.

RAC check all fuses dont they, thought it was the first thing they done, wen my car cut out last xmas they checked everything my car wouldnt turn over....it turned out a bare wire touched another or something and caused a short in my whole dash board if its an after market cd player check in behind it thats where mines was but a diagnostic could not find the fault!

what do you mean turn over?? the only way i can discribe the way it sounds is as if im trying to start the engine without petrol in the car, (there is petrol though as i filled up the night b4 x.mas eve)... rac didn check any fuses. just tryed to start the car with the clutch in and it made a really nasty nosie as if something wes loose. dont want to try it again just incase!!!

its an 05 plate, i havent had servises with renault though as my m8s a macanic 4 ford so he services my clio 4 me on the cheap,! will that cause my warrant to be void?

I had a similiar prob years back with a pulsar turned out to be earth of fuel pump. Worth a quick check maybe
