Citroen AX GTi - help please! :o)

Just a quickie (oo-er missus) –

Has anyone had any experience of Citroen AX GTi’s? A friend is looking to get one but it would be her first car and she’s not overly skilled mechanically or financially, so it would need to be fairly inexpensive to run.

I know you can get a fairly decent one for under a grand, but is there anything in particular I should look out for when we go shopping for one? FSH, 3-doors, low miles etc are what I’d be looking for, but any particular rust areas? Likely damage? Cambelt changes? Smoke? Etc etc etc

Ta muchly peeps,

Paul.

Watch out for rust, their terrible for it. Also check the gear box is ok cos their like a tractor box!

Fun cars though, rapid little beasts. May only have 75-85 bhp but they weigh 700 kg!!!!!

Cheers. (y)

Rust isnt too difficult to spot so Im fairly confident about that bit - they dont have plastic wings or anything do they?

Will the gearbox do anything in particular to say thats its knackered? Or just feel like a dick in a bucket (sloppy ;))/ a stick grinding through metal shards (graunchy)?

i used to have a 205xs, exactly the same engine!!! wicked little cars!!! um as for the motor it can take a lot of abuse just make the sure the gearbox isnt grinding, also tickover may be "tappity" but just needs adjusting, pretty easy job!

All of this is indeed true...

My mate either wants one of these or a Mark1/2 escort (shes not that rich!) or a scirocco (v. hard to find). I had thought about the accident thing and I would prefer her to get the Veedub, or even the escort (RWD? First Car? Girl? !!! ;)) on that aspect, but shell get what she wants!

Pah 85bhp. AX-GTs have 110bhp. I used to have a mint white one. Second owner with only 20,000 miles on the clock. It was an 89 model. F401 KGB. If you get one, try and get an unmodified one. Saying that they do need lowering. I had mine done for around 90 quid, but that was back in 1995. They have springs at the front and torsion beam on the rear. Some of them come with three stud fitment, so finding aftermarket alloys will be a chore. You used to be able to get them converted to four stud by APB motorsport. They used to do loads of mods for the AX-GT, but Im not sure if they still do. Get a K&N induction kit for it. It totally changes the response. Take no notice of the tuppaware build quiality comments. They put me off , even before I had sat in one. When I did get one I realised they were unwarrented comments. If the alloys are the original ones, they will be prone to pitting. The finish on them was faulty. This can be recitfied with a good clean and polish from your favourite alloy wheel refurbisher. After I sold F401 KGB I saw it driving around on the original alloys, but they had been mirror polished and they looked the business.

they did have 85 bhp

the GTIs had a little more but not 110 unless moded! Finding a good healthy one will be harder especially an unmodified one!

GTis have the 4 stud!

and the build quality is naff ive been in 4 different ones and they all are rattly but then its an old car!

Bought one for my wife last September...not fuel injected though.Managed to find two owner with f.s.h only 28000 geniune mileage.Had the timing belt done but apart from that everything else was ok, it is a great runabout.Pretty qiuck and has been reliable.Build qualiy not bad, several rattles but so has my CUP.Bodywork is perfect..no rust but paint is a little faded on the bonnet. She loves the car.....:D

if she is only young geting insured even on a 1300 mk1/2 escort can be a hard job let alone a mexico or an rs but if i had choice escort or ax the escort would win hands down

Lets clear a few things up!

AX GT is a 1.4 twin weber carb putting out 85bhp standard with a 0-60 of 9s and a top speed of 108mph

AX GTi is a 1.4 injection putting out 100bhp with a 0-60 of 9.3s and a top speed of 112mph(IIRC)

The reason for the difference in 0-60 times is because the GT is lighter than the GTi, as it has an alloy head. Weight is between 720-735kg AFAIK.

Sounds right to me

Cheers for all the replies guys. :) My mate has a grand in the hand and would like a car, tax and enough for a holiday left at the end! Not that much then!

A few AXs on Autotrader, but the better GTs seem to be about £800. Im sure you could get that down, but after tax doesnt leave a lot left... Id love her to get an escort too (only so I can drive it ;)) but she has yet to check out insurance quotes. Im sitting down when they come in! Theres some sciroccos at around the £800 mark that look pretty good, but Im not sure if theyll be more difficult to get parts for than the AX? Both are cheap to buy as cars, but individual, hard-to-source parts will probably be expensive...

check for rust under the back side windows, and check the head gasket isnt gone or on the way out,its just gone in my gt,they seem to eat head gaskets.mk2s are the job but theyre not an everyday car due to rust etc,my modified mk2 rs2000 was an excellent car very quick and actually very easy to drive fast but every couple of weeks i had to go round the car checking for fresh little blisters of rust etc, plus normally the door seals wud leak in the rain so every month i would have to take out the carpet and dry it off and dry off the floor pans etc and apply new waxoil.plus it was very heavy on juice even thou it was running on the standard twin choke weber, thou it was a 2.1 with a fast road cam and flowed head etc.theyre still a brilliant car thou and defo my all time favourite.
