Clicking on startup 182

  Arctic 182
Just gone to head to work and the 182 won't start up.

Just checked the dash lights etc and everything goes out that should do, including the immobiliser light. But then when you turn the key all I get is a rapid clicking noise coming from behind the centre console.

Had a new battery fitted a couple of weeks a go by the RAC - have called them out to check it over again. It also had a service on Saturday, but can't see how this would cause any issues.

Any ideas anyone, in case mr RAC can't work it out... thanks!

Ok so it was the battery again - nothing wrong with it according to the RAC, but there is a 0.4amp drain on the battery when everything is off and locked... anyone got any ides/previous experience as to what might be causing this?

Checked the lights and everything's going off and staying off... read a post somewhere on here that mentions the alternator, although appreciate it could be one of a lot of things!

What's UCH fletch?

Only other electrical symptom recently is the cruise control playing up (all the buttons are doing the wrong thing - eg reduce speed button increases speed)

Will have to check the earths Adam - although would it be this if it started up with a jump from the RAC van?

Ahh, if it's started up from jumping I think that would rule out the earths as I don't think you'd get anything if it was that. Good luck finding what it is though :)

I had the rapid clicking noise at one stage. It also turned out to be the battery. Mines still on the original (2004) all because i was sat with the ignition on and kept using the windows, blowers etc. After i jumped it and gave it a good run for an hour or so its been fine since. Have you given it a good run recently?

I had this play up on mine. It's such a bugger to get to (under the manifold on the back of the engine!)

Cleaned mine up and its been fine ever since.

Mines been doing this for a couple of weeks now,
I took it to a Renaut specialists but they coudn't find anything wrong on diognostics,
they checked battery earth, starter motor, crank sensor, engine fuses, relays, but they're all fine.

I'm leaving it with them over night this week because it only tends to do it first thing in the morning,
athough saying that it fired up first time today.

It only pisses me about when I need to get somewhere, give it to a garage and it wont do it. :S

Try and check the small wire that connects to the starter motor.

The easiest way I found to reach it is to jack the car up and get the drivers wheel off. You can just about get a hand to it. Even a wiggle on the terminal may clean the contact up enough.

Also look at the positive connection to the battery, under the plastic bit where the 2 thick red cables join....

If the RAC guy was a bit heavy handed when changing the battery he could have cracked the solder join under the cover... Just had it on my 172 cup after an engine change...

Thanks
Jim
