Hello so I brought a clio 1.4 16V mk2 2005 clio it already has the 182 body kit so it looks like a 182 but it just doesn't have the engine I love the colour and I love how the paintwork is clean without any scratches or dents it also has nice alloy wheels and suspension now I want to get more power and I want Turbo I love the sound of it therefore I decided to do a conversion of the 1.4 to a 182 engine now I know people are going to say u could pick up a 182 for cheap but they are either high mileage or lower then a 2005 and the colour is not blue I just love my cars colour blue I was wondering how much do you think the conversion will cost and could you suggest a place closest to London that will do the conversion thank you very much ! Also the only downside of the conversion is that the car does not have electric mirrors and a/c and curious control like the original 182 does and if possible i will get them done aswell

There are 1*2's that are blue?
You say you want turbo, but then said you're putting in a 182 engine? You going to turbo it again after? Sounds like silly money to me. If you're going to go to all that effort of fitting a different engine, why not put a turboed lump in it already? Megane for example.

Your dreaming and wasting your time. If you stick a turbo lump in then everything else would need upgrading to cope with the power.
There's also no point converting to 182 when you can already buy that engine in that shell.
Just save up and buy a 1*2

  182, SQ7, Trafic
I will convert to a 182 for you for £3000 or 182 turbo it for £6000. That's cheap for having some one do it.

Just buy a 182, take everything out of it and put in the 1.4, and I mean everything!

£1200 will buy you a half tidy 182.

If you 'convert' a 1.4 it will be worthless when you come to move it on.

Coming from a man that has been wasting money on cars for 20+ years, don't do it.

damn to be honest with u im only 17 i hardly got insurance on the 1.4 and it cost me a lot thats why i wanted to do the 182 swap after i drove the 1.4 for like 6-months to 1 year and then let dvla and insurance know as i stated above i want to the conversion because the 1.4 already has the 182 bodykit and paint work is very clean no dents / scratches i guess ill just try to get more power on the 1.4 then as everyone said its not worth it to me then i guess its not worth it lol

Insurance will absolutely Molest you for having a car that modified at 17.

You also need to think about the brakes and suspension. A 182 isn't just a 1.2 with a big engine. The track, suspension, brakes, steering rack iirc are all different to make best use of the extra power.

You'd honestly be better buying a 182 and spraying it blue.

But insurance will still pull your pants down.

...I can't believe I'm saying this but...

When I was your age I sounded so much money on my old 1.4 trying to make it look nice and go faster. After a few years when I was almost 'done' with it. I bought a 197 because the insurance had dropped so much lol.

Genuinely, save your money for when you can afford something altogether faster. That's coming from someone who's been in your position.

to be honest insurance is not a big problem for me as i got modified insurance but how do you think i could get extra power on the 1.4 and yeah i know i need to change the gearbox and other stuff to fit the 182 engine on

Just enjoy the car mate, keep it clean then in a years time you will have a years ncb and insurance company's wont take all your wages to insure a 182.

You could probably turbo the 1.4 but it will cost you £££ and the engine will probably melt on your drive home.

You could fit an induction kit for a bit more noise, let it breathe a little easier, i wouldnt bother with a remap, you wont feel the gains of maybe 5bhp.

Ah good on you.

But you can't, I tried. Unless you throw mega money at it, you can't get more power. That goes for most n/a engines.

If you are dead set on chasing power. The s1600 rally cars use the 1.6 k4m engine which I'm sure is essentially the same as your 1.4 k4j.

They got 220bhp from them somehow but the power was right at the top of the Rev range so it would make it tricky to drive daily.

so your telling me to swap my 1.4 engine to the 1.6 k4m engine instead ?

This was my old car.

I Put loads of time and effort into making it look like that, I wanted power so wasted £200 on an induction kit, I wanted better handling so fitted coilovers (these I'd actually recommend as you can sell on), I wanted it to sound better so I put a monster exhaust on... Realised it was stupid and took it off.

Wanted a replica so fitted the front and rear bumpers along with turinis and a cup spoiler. Then sold mostly everything on a couple of months after the below pics were taken, chopped the car in for peanuts and got a 197.

Sorry, I could be wrong but I think the engines are the same block with different heads and strokes which affect the displacement. You could look into changing the components to give you the extra 200cc and then look into what made them produce 200bhp.

But again, that'd be almost a much work as fitting a new engine.

Modified insurance at 17? That must be absolutely rinsing you, or at least it will if you do anything to change the power.

If you want a fast car, start with a fast car. As others have said there's a lot more to it than just the engine.

What you're trying to do sounds great in theory, and then you'd have something a bit more special and different too, right? In the real world it's completely impractical and a huge waste of money. What you're talking about is effectively going to end up being a re-shell - taking the bare chassis and body from your 1.4 and fitting all the running gear from another car into it.

You could try just the engine and gearbox, but then what about the driveshafts, and what about the brakes to cope with the extra performance, and the suspension so you're not just spinning all the power away, and... and...

You just won't believe how much money you'll burn chasing this down if you actually do it, unless you have the skills and time to do it yourself.

Source: everyone in the world who's ever done it.

Ever.

To have what sounds like a decent car at 17 is brilliant, enjoy it for what it is and save up for the next step. You'll get yourself into something much better a hell of a lot quicker that way.

I know it's boring, sorry :(

you got a good point a very good point but i know that i need to change the driveshafts and brakes etc... when i was searching on auto trader for a blue 182 it costed either £2.500+ or it had high mileage and i brought my clio for £300 from someone i knew so i thought i could get the 182 engine conversion done for around £1k to 1,5k if not i will try to get 1.6 k4m engine and ill be more then happy with that engine

Fair play to you OP, it's your money spend it how you want. I'm sure I remember people telling me similar stuff at your age but did I get the 1.1 fiesta, noooo I got the mighty 1.6 cavalier ;)

Yeah, I'm old. :D

Mine was 1.4 16v too.

Buy this

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/201846199731

Spend a few weekends with mates stripping everything out of it and put it all into your car.

Not just the engine and gear box. Strip the axles and sub frame off yours, remove the engine and gearbox, steering rack and everything else bolted on underneath.

Then replace everything with the 172 items

No, but you seem dead set on it lol.

And I know how you feel, so if you can get reasonable insurance on it and have a 2005 1*2 for less than a grand (after selling the 172 bits) then go nuts lol, you shouldn't lose too much on it come sale time.

Note that very few people will want a mega modified 1.4 Clio when you're done... Apart from maybe as a track car.

And as soon as you consider paying a mechanic/specialist to do it for you, it's become an obscenely bad idea as it'll cost far more than it's worth.

I don't mean to come across as nasty by the way. You'll understand when/if you finish lol

i guess its not worth it as everyone i asked said dont do it even on the forums people are saying its not worth it so ill just stick with my 1.4 for a year or 2 and then get a faster car later on or i will get the 1.6 engine in the one u told me about

No mate, no. In no way, shape or form is it worth doing the conversion.

This will be a bit blunt but you have to be cruel to be kind.. you've been watching far too much Fast & Furious.

Sincerely yours,
The ClioSport population.
Actual lols at this, the mrs face looking at me is a picture, like maggy thatcher sucking on a lemon!

  dan's cast offs.
people want silly money now for 1.6k4 engines, i need one to use for a turbo set up to save building it up on the car. most places wanted £100 for an engine!!

What ever it costs pal I'm happy to pay up to £300-500 to get that 1.6 engine in my clio as long as it has more then 200bhp that will make me more then happy

How quick do you expect this conversion to happen too if you do go ahead with it? I presume you've paid for a years insurance so that goes down the pan.
Do you even have the ability to do this yourself?

The insurance would be higher on a engine converted clio, than just getting a 1*2 in the first place. If they'd even cover you!
I quite enjoyed my 1.2 for the first year, didn't really feel it as 'slow' but it's not comparable to the 182. You're going to end up through a hedge if you want to chase numbers.
