Clio 1.4 16v or 1.6 16v

Hi all

Not going to bother going for an engine transplant to replace my diddy 1.2 16v.
Going to get a new Clio instead.
What do you think I should go for, a 1.4 or 1.6?
Obviously insurance will be more for the latter, but tuning will not be a problems as I with L.Vic.

What is the BHP difference between the 2?
As Im pissed off with my 1.2 already, maybe its best to jump to a 1.6 as I may get fed up of the 1.4 aswell!

Might get the same colour and remove my system, springs, filter, zorst and rims and fit on the new Clio!

Same baby but faster! Opinions please..

my opinion is that the difference between the 1.4 and the 1.6 is very small. Ive driven both (own a 1.4) and am more than happy with the speed and acceleration. I looked into getting a 1.6 but the difference on the insurance wasnt worth the extra.

There was no great noticeable difference between the 2. The 1.4 16v is a great engine and is very underestimated!

Dan.

Yeah, I think the BHP of the 1.4 is 98bhp and the 1.6 110bhp?
But as tuning and insurance is not a problem, then I could tune the engine up a bit and gain a few BHP?

if insurance and money isnt a problem, then go for the 1.6 cos its better, but only by a small bit.

Ill give u and example, i had a pop with a 1.6 a few months back, and i beat it in my 1.4. It must have been cos i was a better driver runnin on optimax or sommet, but it proves how little the difference is.

The 1.6 is always going to have that 11bhp extra, but would the max amount of BHP gained from tuning be about the same do you think?

Are 1.4s cheaper to buy that a 1.6 im guessing...

right, ill have to seriously look in to the 1.6 then.
With a k-tec zorst system and Piper X filter with relocation, how much extra bhp will that release from the 1.6?

Atleast I can then starting thinking about other mods, such as chips etc, which just isnt an option with my 1.2.

You wouldnt notice to much difference in the 1.4 16v.

Id get the 1.6. If youre buying second hand try to find one with all the kit such as CC.

Obviously the 1.6 has that extra power, but it also costa more Insurance and Tax wise.

1.4 16v -> IG 5, Low Tax band
1.6 16v -> IG10, High Tax Band

Also you will need to check with Liverpool Victoria about mods. Maybe there just nice to you but I have to pay extra for my mods, etc

Same as! I thought for the small amount of difference it wasnt worth it when it went to double the insurance and higher tax.

I am 21 & passed my test in July (passed in a clio 1.5 dci 65bhp) & ordered a brand new Clio 1.6 16v in black which I still havent got :( (theres a 10 week waiting list).

The reason I went for the 1.6 was the extra 12bhp & the fact that they are rarer than 1.2 & 1.4 that are seen on the road.

As reguards modding I thing someone on here as a 1.6 16v clio that has got 137bhp tested through the flywheel...

Good look on whatever you decide :D...

If you get a 1.6 with AC/CC then isnt the weight of that going to equal the power of a standard 1.4 16v?

I think the 1.4 is just as rare as the 1.6. I see 100s more 172s/182s/and 1.2 16v clios than anything else.

The DCI 100 is supposed to have as much torque as the 182 at low RPM but im not sure what the insurance is like on these pocket rockets.

I dont really care about climate control, never had it and uses more fuel!
If the relocation kit doesnt fit the 1.6 ill get a viper or something anyway.
Didnt think about the tax, bit its only once a year anyway eh.

You can now get AC/CC with new clio 1.6 16v as part as a opition pack or as a extra... I think its an extra £500/£600 on top of the standard price of the car...

ive got a 1.4 16v, i think it is awsome. straight threw de cat exhaust, must be touching just over 100 bhp now. perfectly adequate for wot i want.

Nice one Tom.
Do the ram chargers work well then?
Dont look like they can be taking in much cold air even thou they have a heat sheild??

The difference between a 1.4 16v and the 1.2 16v is much greater than it is between the 1.4 and 1.6. As Dink_16v would say, (remembering hes got 17s and lots of ice), there is absoultely NO difference between his 1.6 and my 1.4

And the insurance group on the 1.6 is 4 higher than the 1.4! So from a sensible point of view, the 1.4 (for a under 21 year old) would be alot cheaper.
Also, If you have the 1.4, you can rest assure that its one of the fastest 1.4 stock hatchbacks you can get these days, however, If you want the ultimate clio dynamique and money isnt an issue, then go for the 1.6!

Hope that helps!

Bullsh*t. Get a 1.6 theyre much better than the 1.4s i test drove. At least with a 1.6 you can have a vtr and not be shown up by every chav on the block.

AND

the 1.6s are rarer than the 1.4s.

i quote S2PTH

Nah the vts are quite a bit quicker. But I pull alot on a VTR from 100-120ish in the 1.4

Oh and thats another thing, seen 128 on the clock (which is probaly more like 122 GPS)
