clio 1.6 16v compared to a VTR

  saxo vtr
i currently have a VTR, ideally id get a clio sport, but insurance costs are putting me off. anyway looking at the 1.6 16v is only a group 8 insurance, just wondered how it compared performance wise to a vtr? cheers

Just looked, got the VTR and VTS wrong way around

Still think a VTR would beat one though.

pretty even, however the clio is a 16v and has a good 10bhp and lots more torque.

lots more potential for tuning.

strip it out and it's a weapon

Hmm i'd rather have a 1.6 clio. With a bit of wieght loss it would be just as quick if not faster. The clio is a nicer car really. When i had mine it was quick, real quick for what it was. Lot faster than my 1.4 now.

Being said id have a VTS over a 1.6 clio:)

vtr's weight fook all!

900kg vs 1000kg

100bhp vs 110bhp

depends on the driver tbh and the condition of the car!

ive personally had 4 drag race's with a vtr (on private land) 1st gear the vtr was away...

bang into second, the clio starts to creep up and also holds second gear for long IMO 3rd gear clio easily overtakes 16v kicks in 4th and 5th, ur away. and not just buy a bit...

clio is faster, nicer and a better non chavy car... but.......

im suprise the vtr is lighter?? didnt know that

and i thought vtrs vere 90 bhp?

The phase1 VTRs (with the square headlights) were all 90bhp but the later models with the 'tear drop' headlights were all 98bhp.

There was a slight overlap when the face lift model came out but I'm not sad enough to remember the exact year....I'm sure someone on here is though! ;)

Depends whether you want to drive one of those recylable fabric carrier bags from M&S with a 1.6 litre engine in (Clio) or an Asda plastic bag with a 1.6 litre engine (Saxo). I'd take the extra weight over broken legs if you have crash tbh, remember, you're the crumple zone in a Saxo :p. Go for the Clio tbh.

I'm not even going to comment. Everyone in this thread bar the OP has never driven either IMO.

My 1.6 was faster than my mates VTR. Not by very much though. But as said pulls much better at higher speeds than the VTR. But would not buy the 1.6 as a performance advancement over the VTR, waste of money.

I've driven both. the vtr is awseom fun, feels a lot more hmm i cant think of the word, than the clio, but id rather have a 1.6 clio over a vtr. But i'd rather have a vts over a 1.6 clio or even a S1 rallye. S1 rallye ftmfw tbh

shitron crapso vtr are very slow. my 1.6 16v zetec FIVE DOOR 96reg escort kept up with my mates!

bare in mind my first escort had done 110k miles by that point, compared to his t reg on 50k...

Id love to say all no go and no blow but honestly the Saxo VTR is quicker than your 110bhp clio down to the power to weight ratio. 0-60 is 8.9 (claimed).

The saxo weighs 935kg's less than a ton so the ratio you can forget it...

Performance would be very similar - I'd imagine the VTR would have the edge. Clio a lot nicer inside, and a lot safer, with a bit more room for mates. But if it's only performance that matters the VTR, especially if a 100bhp later one, would probably be a bit quicker and is certainly a better handler than a non-RenaultSport Clio. Just IMO of course.

VTR has a lot of tuning options available as well, some choice breathing mods can pull decent power gains on them, not as much as the 16v engine but not too shabby either. Then it'd have a good advantage IMO.

My old 1.4 16v clio was exactly the same is a vtr. Dont no what all the fuss is abouy with them, there rubbish. 1.6 clio any day! Loads of low down tourqe. vts's arnt particularly quick, bit nippy but wasnt bowled over when i drove one. clio FTW, new cams, chip, slammed and you will eat them both for breakfast.

The VTR is NOT quicker than the Clio. Ive driven both and I own a 1.6 and a VTS. You can pick a VTR up for pennies now and they are awsome fun to drive and cheap to run. All the bellends stereotyping are idiots.

I'd take the Clio over a VTR purely because of how much better the chassis and build quality is, but then its a lot more expensive. The Clio is a lot faster than Parkers will ever tell you so get your heads from up your arses. RS Clios aren't te millenium falcon that everyone thinks. POint to point either of these with a few choice mods will be no slower point to point driven right.

Depending how much its going to cost you, I dont really see the point in changing.

If you had a 1.1 or something then working out which to buy is obvious, its the Clio.

Save a bit more and buy a 172 or get a VTS/GTi.

Dave, do you feel more relaxed after that little rant? lol

Not all of them were early 'teardrops' got a silvertop engine like the later ones but still had 90bhp, You can only tell by looking under the bonnet as they have a different airbox, TB and no cat in the manifold

My mate had a vtr it never seemed to run right at all and even when it did it would be about a week before somthing else broke. also felt like you were sharing the inside with 100 spanners the amount it rattled. might just be that one though.

to be honest though nither of them are going to amazingly different the clio will be abit nice inside and more comfy.

the saxo will be abit more basic and better handling i would of thought

performance wise not to much in it ??? :dapprove:

My nan drives a Saxo...is she a c.unt?

Stereotyping small minded pillock ;)

I'd go for the clio at the end of the day, purely because I prefer the shape. (Yes it really is that simple for me). Saxo's are huge fun to drive though. Just not my cup of tea.

my mates have got a 1.4 clio and that has a viper kit on and that beats vtrs so a 1.6 wud kill them. dont no about a vts. wud rather a clio any way see to many done up saxos. cnt rememba the last tym a seen a vtr without lexus lights. get the clio!!

At the end of a day you want an RS model, stick with the VTR for now, small, cheap to run and in the end quite good fun, save for the RS instead of compromising for a 1.6 clio.

VTRs better than a 1.6 clio IMO at least it looks different to the rest of the range, It will also be a lot more fun to drive,

For the fun factor in the bends i prefered mine over my sport, rev the tits off it and not give a toss :)
