Clio 1.6 16v on Throttle bodies. (Rsi model?)

Anyone know anything about this? I have a friend who wants to enter the Saloon car series and wants to price/build the above car.

You'll need standalone (Not sure on the regs of the series he wants to enter??) for sure.... ITB's are circa 1200 a set, 600 +fitting and mapping of ECU so you're looking around 3k....

Basically, there is a guy with a 1.6 Corsa on Bodies. He is running 220hp. (I think the engine cost around £12k!!) and there is also a mate with a 1.6 Pug on bodies that is 170bhp.

Matey doesn't want to set the world on fire, but wants to be able to compete. Not sit at the back all day long.

Is this a good enough engine for the job? What is the set up like reliability wise?

The Corsa engines were developed by Lotus andmade 150bhp, then de-tuned with the rediculous inlet tract they came with from the factory so will always respond well to mods. The K4M makes 220bhp in the S1600 series and is a really well designed engine, has a good set of rods to take RPM and the head is well worked as standard. The inlet tract is crap and the cams are UBER mild. Wacky cams, solid lifters and a set of ITB's and it'll be MORE than capable!

When he's done it, tell him to give me a ring. I'll want to know how he gets on!!

For the ECU and mapping I'd go to someone who is well recomended for mapping, give a few companies a ring and see who they say...

For the cams and ITB's, personally if you're mechanically minded, have a crack. The only thing thats of any difficulty is setting up solid lifters (Providing you go wild enough to warrant them www.catcams.be will give you all the info you need). Timing them up is a peice of piss if you have or can get hold of the locking tools!

You can retro fit a Cooper S crank too with some minor machining to the block making it 1850cc but you'll need custom rods and may aswell use HC pistons too. It'll be a monster though

"As enhenced the Renault K4M engine is, to tune it from 110 HP to 220 HP is a big challenge !!

The FIA regulation on the S1600 categorie concerning the engine relies on the following statements:

- single throttle box with a max diameter of 60 mm
- max engine revs : 9000 RPM
- to keep the original valves diameter
- no modification on the oil and water pump
- Compression ratio : The maximum compression ratio is 13/1.
- Valve timing and valve lift : Variable systems are prohibited.
- Variable geometry intake and exhaust manifolds are prohibited
- titanium and magnesium are prohibited.
- The head intake and exhaust holes can be increased in dimension by only 4%

What we have done on the engine:

- The K4M bloc has not been modified (nor bore and stroke)
- the crankshaft is extracted from the Renault K9K standard engine !!!
- the crankshaft bearings are specific for heavy duty
- the conrods are specific (machined from solid with Renault K9K bearings)
- the pistons (specific shape) are aluminium forged
- Intake and exhaust ducts of the cylinder head have been polished to improve their permeability.
- Of course the camshafts are specific (machined from solid for the rigidity), also the valves and springs.
- Because of the high engine max rev, we have redesign the rockers and hydraulic bumps but keeping the same concept (rocker with bearing and spherical contact between the rocker and the bump; the hydraulic height adjustment of the rocker bump has been cancelled to prevent the bump from pumping up).
- We have particularly paid attention to the acoustic adjustement between the air intake manifold and the exhaust line in order to optimise the compromise of the torque diagram (for tarmac and gravel use)
- the flywheel (steel machined from solid) has been lightened to reduce inertia.
- The ECU (specific to racing) is from Magneti marelli (MF4M)

Because of the modern design of the Renault K4M engine, we are confident in having one of the very best S1600 engine today !!

Yes I know, a friend of mine is doing this also with his k4m-engine.
85.80mm stroke is a word, but do you think pistons with nearly 83mm bore is a good idea??? I know the Woessner oversize pistons, the have 80,5mm, this would make nearly 1750cc. And conrods....?

IMO a lot of effort, makes only sense if you are limited to 85mm cylinderdistance by some reglement, or need really a lightwight engine, in other cases get a F4P or F4R.
