Clio 1.6 16v

  320d
I'm thinking of upgrading to a 2004> MK2 1.6 16v. The insurance isnt too bad, only a bit more than my 1.2 16v. I would use it as the basis for a bit of a project, to modify it tastefully over time untill i can afford a proper hot hatch. I also want a mint condition one as my 1.2 16v isnt in the best of condition for its age and i'd have to spend a fair bit just getting it back up to scratch.

Do you think its a good idea?

Do they provide a good upgrade from a 1.2 16v in terms of speed and handling?

Presume everything else about them is the same as the 2004> MK2 1.2 16v's.

hold out for a abit more for the proper hot hatch assuming itl be a 1*2...
if you want the 1.6 itl be hard to find, dont seem as common as the 1.2/4's

I would definately want to own a 1*2 in the future but i'm still 18 and was looking for something to tide me over untill then. Next year when i renew my insruance i'll be 19 with 1ncb (hopefully) but i still think insurance will be too expensive. I wouldnt mind a fiesta zetec s but i'm kind of hooked on the clio culture now especially this forum. Probly not good to choose a car based on how much you like the owners club but i can't help it tbh.

keeping your car for a while longer alows you to save, cheaper running costs etc which can be put towards your new car, rather than having a 1.6 in the interim and spending more on running that.

I supose so but when cars are your hobby its hard to wait another 2+ years to have one you can enjoy, spend time on etc.

Thats why I was looking for an intermediate car.

  RB 200 Cup!
def get one - i had one at 19, the dynamique with all the options - was an amazing little car, very pokey but cheap to insure

  C63 AMG
By the time insurance costs are not prohibitive a 56 or 07 plate 197 (assume you like it) would be an option. Wait until you're 22, don't crash in the meantime and then jump from 1.2 to 2.0!

ive got one and love it, loads more grunt then the 1.2 but its still not a 2.0 although i was driving in front on a spirited cs meet and a few people was asking who was driving at the front and assumed it must of been a 172 and not me in my 1.6.

well it opened up more roads that are possible to over take on... 3rd pulls like 2nd gear on a 1.2 that's the only way i can think of explaining it.

Thats the type of upgrade i'm looking for. The 1.6 has around 45% more BHP but is only 55KG more so it should be a decent upgrade. Especially with the upgraded brakes and suspension.

I think i'll just bide my time keep browsing ebay, autotrader and pistonheads and see if the right car pops up. i'm in no rush to change cars.

Interesting thread this... whats the 0-60 on a 1.6 16v? On autotrader etc, the 1.6;s are generally cheaper than the 1.2;s, I guess cos the 1.2s are more popular with cheaper insurance, more economical etc?

  mk5 fiesta zetec s
i just got a 1.6 a week ago and am very happy so far i got it for 2100 with 60.000 miles 12 months mot. woman owner, pink floor matts lol. second gear it pulls to near 60 then 3rd gear pulls very well :) it wipes the floor with my old saxo

i went from a 1.6 vtr to a 1.6 clio which is a bit of a sideways step people would say but im pleased i did,had plenty more tools to play with and much more reliable and comfortable.as said above they do pull quite well for what they are.mine ll be up for sale soon

i jumped up to a 1.4 and i felt the change a bit more. more nippy when over taking was the main difference.

so a 1.6 most be a lot better.

matt_trev has a good 1.6 if your interested mate.

looks smart!!!

Is the performances a big diffrence from a 1.2 to a 1.6 ?

Yeah mate! Great nippy motors, i was gonna get 1 but i held out for a 182. But they are great fun and simple mods would make it even better. I would mate coz in the current situation they are cheap to run, very good on low revs.

I'm in such a similar situation to you Brett, really want an RS but can't justify the insurance.

It's between a Zetec S or the 1.6 16v...

The 1.6 has stiffer dampers, thicker ARB's and slightly lower suspension compared to the 1.2/4's, too. Really is a better all round car. Despite what people will trya nd tell you, theres not light years in it pace wise with a 172 either.

Although its not standard you're more than welcome to have a go in mine at the next meet Brett.

Wont get a fairer offer than that!

May change mine for one of these next year all being well

i reckon.. a 1.6 project would be mint.

strip it out, buckets in the front, good incution kit, exhaust system with decat etcc could be a wee weapon.

but i dont really know what im talking about

Save and get a 1*2. You will get bored of it and want somet quicker in a month IMO. and by the time youve messed around tastefully modding it you could have bought a 182 and insured it. keep the 1.poo while you get 2yncb and buy a sport.:)

Thats my plan mate. This is a thread from the dead, when I was getting impatient a few months back. Plan atm is to get a ph1 172 and have it as a project because I want something I can play with without worring about resale values etc. Nothing will be happening untill my next ncb though, which is next august.
