Clio 1.8 16V- How many miles b4...

  Vento TDI

the engine needs replacing/rebuild? Im looking to buy one. Loads for sale have done around 90K miles. When would an engine need replacing /rebuilafter so many miles? I do about 20K a year you see!!!

Also how much would a rebuild be?

I understand FSH is really important.

Whether to go for a Clio with 60K with part s/h, or one with 90K and fsh Im not sure!

Rgds,

Alex.

Dunno mate, but lower mileage ones are likely to be due:

Cambelt
gearbox
clutch
steering column

I personally (although I have no experience of owning a really high mileage 16v (mines on 110000)) have always thought the Rena\ult engines are pretty bullet proof provided theyre well maintained.

My dad manged 295k in his 2l 25 before trading it in last Nov!

Yer I agree with you mike, mines on 106k now and is running lovely, just over standard average power so that doesnt seem to be lacking and the condition is good too!

However, with high millage engines youve got to remember that the rest of the car has been put through that many miles too, the engine is big considering the size of the car and so dont think it would have been put under too much load via that so its only really when your hammering it!

Ive experienced both a low and high millage motor and got to say that the high runs far better and smoother than the low engined one!

So choice is yours mate, but id go for something thats done a few miles but got good service history or has a lot of recipts and you can tell has been looked after!

But also buddy remember that the service book can never really be fully trusted as aits not that difficult to fraud it is it, its only stamps, dates and millage!

Plus the fact that I think if you know a little about cars then and you service them regularly then you can do a as good as or better job than a garage! Plus the fact that you know everything has been done then too!

my valver was on 91k (i got it on 78k) when oil pressure pump gave in, then loads of other stuff happened & the lump was seized 9no i diddnt carry on driving it, it all went at once)

I had it replaced for a lower mileage one (66k .. or there abouts) and the cambelt & tensioner done while it was out of the car.

To be honest the engines are pretty bullet proof & will go on forever, provided they are regularly looked after & serviced.

My car was very well looked after, so god knows why it gave in like it did.

- as they have said before, one on 60k will need things replacing - soon, but one on say 90k will have had them all done.

Mines a kick in the ass away from 140k. I had the engine rebuilt when i got it as the head gasket had gone but aside from that it ran well so didnt really need it IMO. That set me back 2k but i live in the sticks (Aberdeen) so a specialist could sort you out far cheaper...if needed at all.

I seem to remember Infinicar saying that a customer of theirs had a williams with over 200k and it hadnt been touched rebuild wise. Do search for a better ideas as theres been quite a few posts about valver milage....

91k today and I swear its faster now ive had it, the last owner got it on 33k and managed to build up a h000ge 53k in 3 years, he was a rep so Im quite content on that score!

Since Ive abused it nicely on the twisties I personally think its loosened up a bit..

Id go for the higer mileage bugger..

101k here. had camblet done at 61k but clutch, gbox steering column all original and no probs. had front discs changed on 100k. these were also original. had a lot of mway driving s its lastest pretty well. if tis a runabout and its done lots of miles will be more expensive as opposed one thats sat on long trips.

There a 16V (or was it Williams well same engine almost anyway) with 300k+ which runs fine.

There a few 200k 16V.

Its down to how you drive them, if you do long journeys at lowish revs change the oil all the time and dont push them till there warm then you never neeed worry.

You can but a 16V engine can be got for £200 there were a few at Inficar at one time they sold for that sort of price with 60k or so on them.

When people swop to 2.0 power they usually sell the 16V for cheap.

I smashed up my old valver and the engine was still a runner the car was written off but i bought it back from the insurance company for £75 and sold the bits for a massiv proffit. However for some reason no one wanted the engine that was perfect and still fired up. It only had 38k+ miles on the clock.

I wish i had kept it now as i have another valver that has 85k on the clock. The car is fine and has no problems i just wish i had the low millage engine to put in it. The engine sadly got crushed with the rest of the chasis couldnt give it away.

Mine new one seems to run fine at 85k infact probably more powerfull however i dont think i will keep it after 100k its then time to move on.
