Clio 172 Alloy problem.

Hi, newbie here with a question!.

Ive got a 53 plate 172, which has got a problem with the rear passenger alloy.

The paint is bubbling and peeling off, from the spokes and from the rim.
I took it to a Renault garage where their chief technician took a look at it.
He said it was covered under warranty, and could be replaced. He said that because the rim was peeling, the warranty people could say that it had been kerbed. I did show him that there was no damage to the actual alloy (which you can see where the paint has peeled), and that if it had been kerbed, I would have damaged the wheel as well as the paint, plus theres no scratches or scrapes on the wheel.
He said he would replace the wheel, but if the warranty people rejected it, I would be liable for the price of the new wheel.

I took it to an independent wheel refurbishers who said that the wheel had not been damaged in anyway and that the lacquer on the wheel was very thin.
He said to proceed with the warranty return, but he wont have to pay for a new wheel if it goes pear-shaped!.

Has anybody been in a similar situation or can advise how to proceed?.

You shouldnt have to pay for a poor finish, take some photos close up to show there is no kerb damage and keep them safe.

I would proceed with it and get the wheel on the car asap and then keep aurguing the case if they persist.

If all else fails rimg renault uk and ask for their assistance, that sometimes works

you could send a note with the wheel saying about what has happened, might help

this may be the first of a long line of annoying little problems

Thanks for your replies.

Ive taken some photos of the wheel, and was thinking of getting a letter from the bloke who examined the wheel in the refurb place, giving his opinion.

Just worried Im gonna end up with a bill for a new wheel!.

I rang Renault Uk form the garage, they were less than helpful to say the least!.

It is a defective wheel in the eyes of everyone whos seen it. But, technician reckoned the warranty people could refuse it as it has paint missing from the rim (peeled off, not kerbed).

They should replace it under warranty, same thing happened with the missus MX-5 and they replaced all four.

Whats the worst that happens? they cant force you to part with your money.

Sounds like typical scaremongering from the dealers so you dont proceed.

when my dad took the spare out of his 172 (52 reg) the wheel had never been on the car, but more than half of the wheel wasnt even silver, ther was no lacker on the rim what so ever !!!
needless to say it was covered under warranty - they just swapped it with the othe 172 they were selling !!

£116 is it, ouch!.

Chad, did the wheel on the MX5 peel on the rim, or all over?.

They were bubbling on the edges of the spokes and the rim.
