clio 172 gearbox sirclip help please

hi well im new ti this site so thanx in advance for the help

so i brought a clio 172 facelift model about a week ago and the sirclip went in the gearbox the next day so had no drive a common promblem i was told so i had a garage fix it / fit new sirclip but then 10 miles after i had the car bk it happend again the siclip went again or atleast i think it has becouse its doing what it did before 1 thing i did notice was on the way home after picking the car up from the garage there was realy bad front end wobble when accelerating but not felt thru the steering witch it didnt do before im woundering if these problems are conected ?

any help would be apretiated as i cant understand y the sirclip would go again like that the garage are going to look at it tommorow but i thort id ask u guys as im sure uv had this before

Once they pop they don't stop. And i bet they just welded the circlip in place. Take it somewhere that knows what to do.

I used a plate off ebay on my old mk1 which in essence bolts in place which eradicates the clip popping out.

Thanks for the advice so basically now it's hapened 1ns it's just going to keep on doing it ? But surly not after 10 miles lol also this plate is this my only hope then really or not as the machanic told be that there might of been some s**t in the groove when the sirclip sits or maybe he didn't position it right ? Also sory no it was a new sirclip from renault an wasn't welded in place as I watched him do it but surly welding might be better tho as it would be stronger? In theory lol

Iirc the inner lip on the diff where the circlip sits normally gets damaged when it pops.

So it won't seat correctly, Get it spot welded in place with about 6 spots all the way round. But i would use the plate personaly, alot of people swear by welding the circlip though

I've welded one on one of my cars and never had an issue. But that was a box I bought that had already popped it. I've never had a circlip go on me.

Thanx for that guys I'm gonna get 1 of them renfort rings I think any ideas y the car was wobbling so badly on the front tho ? Yet the steering want ?

As mentioned above the drive shaft is most likely knackerd.

Majority of the time when the circlip goes it damages the shaft. Ive had the complete end ripped apart and spat into the box.

Take the shaft out and check its straight and true ,not twisted and non of the 3 roller things on the end are stiff or missing. And that there is no damage or deep scoring to the inside of the diff.

Do your best not to get swarf in the box when drilling and tapping the holes for the renfort plate. If worried flush the box through a couple of times.

Thanks for that dude is it possible to do the renfort plate with the box fitted or will it need removing cusa lack of space

You can do it in situ. A bit fiddly but can be done.

Once the circlip pops and takes the edge off the groove it sits in it makes it happen again and again.
Deffo no point just keeping redoing it, so either get it welded in place or do one of the bolt in plates, or just put a different box in it.

Needs a pro weld job IIRC as its alloy to steel?

You cant weld ally to steel.

Its steel to steel you need to weld if doing it that way.

It's certainly not alloy.

Stick a magnet on the diff right next to where you drill, it will catch most of the swarf.

That's actually a great idea dude . Does any 1 no where I can get the renfort plate other than eBay as there delivery time is way to long as I need it ASAP really ? I'm going to ring renault tomoz ad ktec just on the off chance like

I don't sorry. Its quite a little complex bit of alloy. If its gets done wrong it will catch the gear housing on the inside or the shaft won't pass through.

Have you contacted him about a different postal option? May be next day or something.

Knew I shouldn't have said that.

I've had one go now. Seam welded it in so I've got a half decent chance of it staying put.
