Clio 172 phase 2

Hi I'm new to the forum, I currently own a Mk2b Punto, and have done for 3 years so I really fancy a change. Something that will be fun to drive but also a reliable daily is what I'm after, and a Clio Sport 172 seems the best car. My budget is £3,000 so it looks like I'll be getting an example thats done around 60 to 90k.

I've joined the forum to ask for advice on what to look out for on a 2nd hand Clio mk2.
I've heard aux belts and cambelts are expensive to change, and should be done within 5 years so hopefully I can find one that's recently been done.

Are there any other things I can expect to be an expensive cost to me? I can afford to run the car and insure it etc, but expensive parts changes and reliability issues may push the car out of my budget. And would people reccommend a Cup over the standard 172?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Cup's are for heroes IIRC.....

£3000 will get you a very tidy cup mate. They're also cheaper for cam belt changes etc....
Are you planning on going on track at all? The cup is a little bit 'rawer', less sound deadening, less luxury stuff (that you don't really need). The only thing that lets the cup down a bit is the poverty spec cloth seats, but they're easily changed for normal RS ones or buckets. There's also a few cups around with AC if that's what you want.

In terms of expensive stuff, the belts are the big one. They need to have been done by a specialist ideally, with a full aux and cam belt kit, not just the belts. Also handy if the dephaser has been done, but not essential.

Pay your membership and have a looky on the for sale section, the best place to find one as you can often find it's history on the forum.

belts needing changed is the only expensive service item you will come across compaired to your average non turbo car! they are pretty cheap to run, spark plugs are around £50 but only need done every (cant remember think its 3yrs or something, they last for ages)

gearbox failures on cars that havn't been driven with mechanical sympothy or had the gearbox oil changed at 72k (i think! its around this mark)

there are a few buyers guides on here the only thing to watch out for is snapped coil springs and leaking rear dampers, noisy wheel bearings or snapped handbrake cables, the rest is just your general stuff to look out for on any used car, steering wheel wear is to be expected

Thanks for the help guys much appreciated!

I think I would definitely prefer the Cup, I can live without most luxuries as driving pleasure is priority. My Punto is lowered 50mm so I am used to a firm ride, and the chassis set up on the Cup sounds spot on. I race karts so it'd be nice to have one that's road legal, and can be used for a couple of summer track days.

I'm going to start searching for a Cup, found a couple on Autotrader already that look pretty good. Just need to convince the dad that they're not as difficult to look after mechanically as he thinks - he's a mechanic so sadly will have to deal with any issues, I'll pay for parts but he will most likely end up fitting them!
