clio 172 prob! clutch i think?

driving along in 3rd put foot down and car just revved thought it was in neutral but tryed it in every gear nothing! no signs of clutch going before hand speedo goes up wen reved in gear!

any ideas?

Circlip has gone on your dif, I had exactly the same thing. Althought I thought this was only on 172 Ph2's?

cost me less than £100 to be fixed including parts and towing, I cant find the thread about it on here for you mate but there is one. A proper guide to how to fix it, I just gave this to a garage and the parts

I doubt it but im only saying that because you have exactly the same problems as I had, I personally have never had a clutch totally break like that.

i have but u could tell it was clutch as it was getting worse! ok i will look into it tomoroow

just towed car home speedo doesnt work whilst being towed, unless i put it in gear and revved. gunna take drive shaft out in a minit, any ideas what im looking for?

i would imagine you will hasve to drain the gearbox oil mate

you will be looking for a circular piece of metal,they used to go all the time on one of my mates old valvers,we even had the box drained,d/shaft out,new clip in d/shaft bk in and gearbox oil bk in in 45 mins lol

if i cant see it take sump out yea and see if theirs one in their! if i do find it is it easy to fix?

if it was drive shaft sheared off it would crunnh and i would have heard something wouldn't i?

Nope can happen to all JC5 boxes pre 182/very late 172 before they switched to the bolted diff retainer to get away from this problem. So can effect a very large number of cars, not just the Clio but can happen to a Williams/Ph1 172/Ph2 172/Lagunas/etc.

Thats what I had also mate, defo sounds like the same problem.

so is it likely to be a new box then? or shouldnt anything be damaged?

You won't know until you get the driveshaft out and have a look. If the circlip is still there then happy days, get the broken one out and get a new one.

If its gone then you need to find it first. Which could mean splitting the box.

the drive shaft is free. ball joint on track rod end wont undo fully so im gunna strugle to do it back up! but once the box oil is drained tommorow i can undo the three bolts and see wat the deal is......

Yep heres hoping for you!

Yes halfords sell the 8mm square sump plug socket you need. I'd refill the gearbox with castrol 75w80 stuff (again halfords sell if your desperate slightly cheaper online), i've used it a few times in the renault boxes and they seem to like it fine.

i have stripped it down again now! same prob the clip has snapped! but also a white ring came out too its a bit bigger that the clip and the spacer!

where is this from?

that white ring mate fits inside the inner cv boot to keep the boot taught when bolting the shaft flange back up to the box,it should push back inside the inner boot

my old valver used to do this,needed a new box inthe end hope this doesnt mean the same for you
