Clio 172 questions

Hi all,

Lastnight, I picked up a silver Clio 172

However, I have a few questions...

It's a 2001 (51 plate) model and the previous owner put the Clio Cup wheels on it. The car has air conditioning and ABS. It does not have cruise control and you cannot turn the traction control on and off. I thought this Clio was a full fat so it came with all the gadgets (i.e. traction control, cruise control, etc...).

So, what I'd like to know is that what makes it NOT a Clio Cup? I was told some were made in silver. The car has the full leather interior but maybe that's an option for a Cup model? The Cup's do not come with ABS or air-conditioning so maybe that was an optional extra?

The reason why I think/know it hasn't even got traction control is becuase when you turn the key two clicks, this is what you see...

The traction control/EBD light thing is not lit. This is why I have "concerns".

Any help, information and guidance is greatly appreciated

cruise control only came on the later ones.

They!?! I took that pic as soon as I got to the second click. The only stay on for a few seconds. It's ok... there's not a problem. I had to time in taking the pic quite precisely.

The traction control light (above the battery light) does not come on.

Early cars have ESP but not traction. Later cars had traction which turns off with ESP together on the switch. Have not noticed the light on my freinds 172 which is a very early phase 2 172 (Y plate)

So I have ESP but not traction control?

I don't have this switch (as mine's a 51 plate) but I know for a fact my mates ones does. His is a 53 plate.

So... what are the chances of this car being a Cup? None?

Yeap ESP but no traction, as I found out when I drove Dees up the Hill at Pugfest on Sunday! You wont have the switch no. Later cars got the switchable ESP and traction control on the switch by the dash lights dimmer.

The Silver Cups where all later than 51 plates I believe, at least 52, but most 53 plate IIRC. The lack of Cup rear spoiler in your pic is also a give away.

Cups only came out on a 52 reg, some press ones were 02 reg. Your car is not a cup.

I love people who buy cars, but don't know what they have got (your not the first on here by any means)

I did know what I had... but a mate said "have you thought it might be a Cup" because he thought they come with an on/off traction control switch, cruise control, etc... I thought it might have been down to the later models.

mines a late 51 plate and i dont have traction control OR esp! RUBBISH!

not that i need it because i am an incredibly safe driver... and a slow one because i drive a FULL FAT phase 2 172

Well there's an easy way to test if it has traction Stop, dip clutch, select 1st, find rev limiter, drop clutch If you do the mother of all burnouts, you have no TC

My 172 is an 03 reg and doesn't have cruise control.

Pre May or June 2002 the FF's didn't have traction control or ESP, mines the same, spent a while trying to work it out then looked in an old copy of EVO. Doesn't really make any difference as long as you can drive and have reasonable clutch control, bit harder then the rain mind, but nothing interferes with the lift over steer so you can go sideways more often.

It is a FF.

If it was a silver Cup amonst other things it would have cloth seats rather than leather, no xenons, no headlight washers, a bigger spoiler.

My 53 172 has cruise, 6cd under passenger seat and switchable ESP/traction.

Cruise was only on late 172 and the 6cd was optional on the late 172s.

Cups are normally sans, xenons, leather, abs, engine cover
plus, turinis, cup spoiler and splitter (on some), non glass front screen, diff springs.

Yours is a FF but before the good stuff got added, how much you pay?
