Clio 172 sat on drive

Hi, I’ve never posted anything on here before, I’ve a cup 172 for about 11 years, I bought it of my brothers who had it about 8 years, I’ve had the timing belt cam shaft dephaser( probably spelt wrong) done twice most recently 2 years ago, not long after that I bought my wife’s car for work, so my Clio has been hardly used for 2 years, still taxed etc… every now and then I drive it to work, but recently is been a bit of a bugger to start, battery seems ok, and the coil light came on once, has anyone got ideas what I should do? Thanks

Worth a Check of the fuse box under bonnet, my old one sat for a long time (wouldn’t start) and the fuel pump relay got a bit furred up with corrosion in its socket. Went through and cleaned all contacts (along with others in the box) and was fine after.

Did the battery go completely dead during that time it sat for 2years? it could be the battery on the way out?

I’ve owned my 172 Cup for 10 years. I’m in a very similar position, it’s a second car, and doesn’t really do anything my other car doesn’t, but I just can’t seem to part with it.

I had mine plugged in to a permanent Norco trickle charger, which seemed to be doing a great job of keeping the battery topped up, until it wasn’t. I went to start the car a few months ago and it was completely dead, apart from the hideously loud original alarm going off. I swapped the battery out and it actually started once then the next day was even deader than before, not even an alarm or alarm led flashing. I got a mobile auto electrician out who was brilliant and diagnosed a dead body control module. He bench tested it to try and repair but no good so got a new one in and reprogrammed it to my original keys. I also put new injectors and spark plugs in as there was a fault on injector 3 (always number 3!) and spark plugs were last changed when I bought the car.

It’s now running great and just passed its MOT. I’ve booked it in with Phil at Grange Service Station in Cardiff to do the full belts change inc. water pump, and also redo the cam cover as there is a slight weep. It’s an expensive job now as the kit is £500 from RPD and labour £375 + VAT.

TL:DR, I was thinking of selling it as I’m just not using it and it’s a becoming an expensive driveway/garage ornament. I know I will regret it as soon as I see it driving off though. It’s by far the longest I’ve owned a car and it’s like part of the family.

Hi mate, I’ve been driving it to work the last couple of days, I normally cover it and drive it on a sunny day, or not raining, but living in Manchester it’s not that often 🤣🤣… I think it just needed a run out to best honest, I want to keep it but as you say money 💰. to keep on the road… I think if I got offered the right price I would sell but we’ve had it in our family 18/19 years…

I think you may regret getting rid. I sure did when I sold my first cup and had to wait 10+ years to get another one.
