I'd be confident if it reaches court they'll have to pay in full for the repair and any claims for additional costs as a result. It comes down to the fit for purpose part of trading standards regardless of warranty being expired. There is no way a manufacturer will have a leg to stand on when the car is only just out of warranty, is low milage and has been serviced in accordance to the manufacturers schedule.
I think the dealer/Renault UK are just trying to call your bluff tbh. Alot of people would just pay up or scrap the car rather than put up with potentially months and months of faffing about with solicitors and court.
