Clio 197 or Megane 225? Help/advice appreciated..

  wanting a 225or197
Been out of a renault sport for 2 years, used to have a 172 and thinking about getting another sport.

Wondering what peoples views are comparing the above cars? common problem? servicing costs? Not worried about mpg as dont do a lot of miles. 7K to spend, which out of the two would buy and why?

cheers :approve:

Can't comment on 197, only the 200. But I did have a 225 and it was great for lazy cruising, not so good on the back roads. It didn't have cup suspension though, so I'd definitely want it if you went for the meggy. Compared to the 200, there's only one that I'd have every time. The clio is much more fun, and if you're not doing a lot of miles I take it it's a weekend car? I'd go for a 197 cupped/cup - more smiles/gallon

Thanks for the reply, will try to test drive a cup too then. still a daily drive, but only do about 8k miles a year

You would probably get a nice F1 version of the megane for about £7k, very nice cars, come with Recaros, but only in blue, with front and back decals in yellow and light blue, I had an R26 and my mate has a 197, and he would have the R26 anyday.

So for me it would be the 225 megane!!!

  Nothing at the mo :(

Meg with cup chassis. The 197 feels gutless. A 225 with one of RStuning's maps, feels like an animal. Would leave a 197 for dead.

  Mercedes
It depends on what you want it for i have had them all

197 with Cup for tight Twisty Roads
R26 For heavy Track Use
225 with Cup (best of both)
225 Animal for the motorway not quite as good for the twistys
I still cant pick an absolute favourite but the 225 with cup for me is the best all rounder

My best mate for many years has a meg 225 F1 which he purchased brand new in 2006 . Dark Blue with black 18" alloys it really looks the part and goes like stink. Never has it let him down either and has been totally faultless. I can live with the noise of the 197 and the hard ride as i do little mileage but looks alone the meg wins and if i did a lot of drving especially on the motorway the meg would be my choice.

????
r26 for track and 225 with cup pack for best of both? There near enough the same car lol!!!
R26 the best but with your budget an f1 would be the best.

Despite what brown bear says about the 197's there not gutless. There good revvy cars, excellent handling and probably the most costly thing being fuel about them. Would imagine servicing etc for both meg and clio are not far off each other.

They are in comparison. My 200 feel like it has more grunt than a 197, and still feels gutless compared to a 225.

cheers for all the replies, some helpfull info so far! think the R26 is out of my budget, have been looking out for an F1 but only found one blue one for sale (think will have to be a 2004/2005 ish age for my budget!)
does the 225 cup come with climate, cruse, xenon etc.?

good point about the cooper s, but a mate had a black cooper s works, after being in that it could only be one of those, and theyre a bit pricy!

It would be nice, but funds dont allow :dapprove:
That's fair enough, I'd go for a ph2 Meg with the cup chassis. The 197 is better looking, but the only Meg I'd take a 197 over is a non-cup chassis ph1.

i had the 200 and then the r26 and yes the r26 was quicker but it was just abit boring, the clio is awesome, its NA engine is absolutely brilliant and the handling is near perfect for fwd, if i had to say 200 or r26 i would go back to the 200

I've had a standard early 197, and now a 197 Cup. Love the cup, so chuckable, its firm, but not crashy. If you can stretch to one with Recaros get them, make it feel more special, I also feel it has a different map than the early 197 I had. Doesnt suffer the kangaroo problem all 197's have half as much as my old one....................... (and i had the patch installed on my first one)
