Clio 1995 Clutch Change

Hi guys, my work hack needs its clutch changing as it is slipping quite badly now.

Clio 1.8 RSI

It is the F type engine as you may well know and I have had three quotes.

£140
£380
£560

These are all in prices. I know what you are thinking, just take the cheapest one, but my question is this.

The cheapest guy said that the gearbox can just be moved to the side, so is a simple and quick job. Whereas the other two said that the gearbox needs to be dropped.

So, has anyone done one on this model or can shed any light on this?

Cheers:D

i think the gearbox would have to be removed so the clutch can be lined up with the centre of the flywheel properly. same with most cars id reckon.

top quote seems VERY cheap, half of that is going to the parts. You can just move the box to one side without removing it from the bay so it's possible, but awkward. I wouldn't do it for that price though. 2nd quote seems more feasible

Yeah, I realise they are not (in most cases) quick and simple, hence the post. My concern is the cheapest chap will just tighten the cable.

On the other hand, the car is probably only worth £500 quid tops, so spending anyware near that on a clutch is a bit crazy, but the car in all other ways is perfect, very nippy, good on fuel and no fvcker wants to pinch it, plus its a joy to take to the supermarket not caring about car park dings etc

if you're not bothered about the car too much then just go for the cheapest. I'd imagine its would take between 1-2 hours labour if they drop the box etc. Is cheap though but as said for a £500 car is it worth spending more. I know what you mean about the cheap quotes being a bit dubious, but you might be suprised.

Say if the price for parts was £70, that leaves another £70 for labour and say it takes him 2 hours @ £35 an hour?

That sort of seems reasonable now, unless 2 hours is not possible?

That's the thing, I have had the car 8 years and it has been faultless and in some ways I am quite attached to it:quiet:

If it was a serious failure I would probably just take it to a weigh bridge, but this is just a wear and tear item

2 hours is pretty optomistic IMO. i've done a mk2 1.2 16v (near enough the same job) in 4 hours. I do hate clutches on clios though and i'm not very quick with them
