Clio Cup news

From EVO..

Due to the success of the Cup it has been rumoured the 172 maybe DISCONTINUED!! Instead Renault are thinking of having a long options list with the Cup being the base car, but owners can add kit as they please. So people will be able to have Cups with ABS! :)

I would be willing to bet that this is a ruse to get the changes incorporated in theCup homologated quicker for Group N. That way the sale of every RenaultSport Clio would count toward the total needed, not just each Cup/Ragnotti.

I would say its more to do with the fact that theyre not homoglating it for anything and so might as well offer more options on the Cup as its selling so well.

EVO say this is UK only btw as over here is where the biggest success has been, so no ragnottis involved.

Or maybe a ruse to take the heat out of the Cup Options debacle. OK you still cant have a roll-cage, seats etc but look at all these other goodies we can offer you!

Umm, makes sense?!

I want a cup with ABS, EBD, rain sensitive wipers, 6 disc autochanger, leather/alcantara....

I think I have just ordered a 172?

(it will be blue tho... ;))

they can hardly call a cup with all the "172" option on it a cup anymore can they..

kinda defeats the purpose of the Cup..and are they only gonna offer a blue one ? cause they would be limiting their customer base if they did.. not everyone likes having the same colour car as every other version of it on the road.

Anthony, but maybe youll want a Cup with ABS? ABS doesnt weight much..15kg max, its only because of supposed homolgation it didnt have it in the first place.

Good point on the colour thing kdf..i guess they just will (if they actualy do it) will have a bog standard 172 and you just pick what you want, i guess all the colours will become options, cant see them making blue the only choice, not that id mind cos id want it in blue anyway!

getting used to no abs now - few hairy moments myself a couple of 1000 miles ago but actually prefer it now!

Dont get me wrong, I like the feel of the braking and my friends often complain that their ABS cuts in when you dont want it but it would be good to have it for normal road use I suppose.

How about a switchable ABS option for the new model?

Would all these cars with extras be mondial blue or would you then be able to get other colours?

When Peugeot brought out the Rallye version of the 306, the cars were all the same apart from a wider colour choice. They didnt change the standard Rallye and start offering them with extras as Rob has posted above about the Cup. Surely it is no longer a Cup and you might as well order a 172 - except that it isnt in that cool blue.

Rob,

Have a look at the FIA list and you will see tha the Ragnotti has a completely seperate homologation in both Group A and N. Renault had to build the Ragnotti/Cup in order to homologate whatever changes were made.

ABS is not an issue in the homologation process as there is a provision for its removal or disablement in the FIA regulations.

It would be interesting to get a copy of the homolgation papers to see exactly what is different between the models.

Looking a little further into the FIA homologation pages, it appears that the main difference is the weight, ride height and track of the Ragnotti compared with the RenaultSport 2.0. It would seem that Renault had to prove that they could sell some basic cars with the lightweight specification to get the weight reduced on the homologation papers.

Now that they have accomplished their goal, they can do what they did with the Willy and offer heavier fully optioned versions for the poseurs.

Do people go for the cup because of the lighter weight/marginal difference in speed or just because they are cheaper? I avoided the cup cos I dont really like the colour and prefered having stuff like traction control and aircon. I have no complaints about the speed of the 172!

Went for the Cup basically because performance per pound is really cant be beaten. It is also a great drive and looks great, dosnt shout nick me or race me like a Evo or Sti.

I would love a 172, cant afford one. Can afford a Cup, dont like not having ABS, and would always feel like I was missing the toys. Then again, we all like different things.

A Cup with a few of the toys would be great, dont mind no leather or climate control, but like ABS and sunroof. Would still install a bass box and a full system in a Cup, so what sthe point in someone like me getting a Cup?

Is there really that much difference on the road?

Im ordering my Ragnotti tomorrow. Ive been looking around for a 968 CS or M3, either E30 or E36 but havent found a decent one. The Ragnotti offers everything that I had in my Willy with the reliability of a new car and nothing looks to come close when the petrol consumption and consumables are factored in.

Just dont like the sound of a two month wait for delivery...damn!
