CLIO Cup VS 172

0.3 of a second 0 - 60mph or ABS......... NO QUESTION ABS all the way... surely some cups will end up in the central reservation....... i am not being funny, but i would not feel comfortable without ABS....... anyone else feel the same?

If youre a good enough driver, you dont need ABS unless its incredibly wet or icy.

Ill take take extra speed please.

see what happens when these vs threads get started,

mines better than yours.....my dad could beat your dad up etc etc etc

please look back and check the other countless vs threads on this subject youll see then end up deteriorating into a b**ch fight rather than a mature discussion of the pros and cons of each

i had a bit of a blast in my cup from macclesfield to bramhall in stockport it was at night over about 8 miles just saw this guy in a 172 & decided to put my toe down from macc country lanes, handforth bypass (a34 so a bit of everything really) the guy happily followed & we kept swapping the lead nothing in it he was an older guy & when i stopped at a petrol station in bramhall got out & had a bit of a chat. His car was 12 months old MK2 172 with a few bits done to the motor bit of an airfilter mod & chip job very sensibly done. & he has had some nice cars in the past so he knew how to drive. his had 26k on the clock so well run in.mine only 2500 at the time. i consider myself to be a reasonable driver having done numerous track day & driving nice cars cos of my job. It really is down to the driver skill & if 1-2 seconds round a 1.5 - 2 mile lap is all thats in it then what the fac...

braking on the track is much more adjustable in the cup with far better peddle feel. slightly less roll through the corners & just a touch more on the limit adjustability in the cup with the slight loss of weight at the back... so go out enjoy your cars & stop bickering... who wants air con anyway..!!

both cars represent different ideas, cup is more rough and ready, 172 youd be cosier.......... even at 143mph....

I think at the end of the day the whole 172/Cup debate revolves around price.

Personnally I favour compromised performance for a little "luxury", but that 2 grand differential, and the fact the Cup is quicker is tempting.

Seedy - RU in the Macc area? Fancy a blast over the "Cat" - Last time I went up there it was orrible, rain and fog - Let me know if you do, would love to chase a cup up there.

Ive never driven a hot hatch with ABS (circumstance, not choice!), but I drive other fairly powerful saloons etc and cant see that Id spec a car like the Cup with ABS if I had the choice. My Valver is tuned and carries about 160bhp per ton Id imagine - I never really drive it in the wet and dont brake and steer together on a regular basis, so Im not worried. I wouldnt say its dangerous to de-spec the Cup of its ABS, you just have to be aware of it and compensate for it with your driving IMO.

Suppose lack of ABS on the track is a good thing.

But does not ABS enable u to steer whilst braking heavily, I think its more of an "just in case" specification.

I know all the good drivers will cope without ABS with superior technique - but when the wagon crosses the central reservation heading straight for ur mush, and ur nuts are on the block, give me ABS over technique any day!

Paddy would it be comfy at 144 though? lol Maybe 145 down a hill, 300 or 400 with a parachute out of a plane at 20,000 feet - the extra airbags would work a treat, but ABS would turn out to be a bit pointless - the leather would keep the burning an arse chafing sown to - Id go for the 172!

It really is simple, you can have one in either Dark Blue, Red, Black or Silver and the other only comes in a lighter blue!

Everyone Happy?

A clio 172 mk1 is only slightly heavier than a cup so I dont see much in it myself in terms of performance. And in any case a mk1 wins hands down on looks :)

You could put an F1 driver in the 172 and he would probably beat every Cup owner in this forum. Similarly, you could have the F1 driver in a cup and he would beat every 172 driver in this forum. The two cars are so similar in performance that it really boils down to the ability of the drivers.

The deciding factors when choosing between the two cars are price, colour range, equipment and options. Enough said.
