Clio RS200 running costs

This discussion on economy is pretty much irrelevent, the biggest cost (for most people) during ownership of a car this age will be depreciation.

Which most people forget as it doesnt come out of their pocket each month ...

Come to buy your next car & you realise that you should have simply bought that depreciation proof £9k e46 M3. Yes, it would cost more in servicing (but not necessarily fuel), but it wont have halved in value like the clio :dapprove:

It would cost more to run on more than just servicing. And £9k for an E46 - it's unlikely to be a shining example. Yes, depreciation wouldn't be an issue but the problem is the daily/weekly/monthly running costs, which would be a good bit more than a 200. The insurance and tax would be hefty too.

My 330 managed 29mpg when tickling the go pedal and averaged around 22mpg on mixed driving. An M3 will be worse, with the temptation there all the time to push it. Then the tyres need replacing...

  loads :)
So you are telling me an M3 isn't going to cost much more to run on a daily basis than a 200, depreciation aside?!

I've just sold an M3 smg cab and was getting 26mpg ave, so was costing less to run in fuel economy? dont know about insurance as i have a traders policy.

Set of Tyres - £400 for clio (Conti's) / £480 for M3 (Falkens-Very good!)
Servicing - 12k clio / 15k intervals. BMW independents prob same as clio specialists price wise, no cam/aux belt to change.
Tax - roughly the same
Insurance - M3 more
MPG - no worse by the sounds of things, much better on the mway.

Depreciation - M3 wins by miles.

Personally, i reckon it would cost less overall to run an M3 over 3 years. Maybe not on a monthly basis, but factor in depreciation & it wins by miles.

Interesting, however, it is the monthly factor that determines if you can afford a car or not.

And another consideration might be a warranty. Have to say that the mpg on the 200 is fecking awful, if an M3 can match it!

Not a chance! My 197 was around 28/29 and thats mainly A/B road driving (20 miles a time ish. Mate who has a 200 gets lower than that, thats with mainly shorter journeys.
Not read the whole thread, but you're 100% wrong about the 200 fella! I'm getting 34ish average, have done since day one. That's calculated, the trip meter says I'm only getting 27ish.

The 200's (and later 197's) have different gear ratios, which are a touch longer, for noticably better fuel economy. Mine is an early car and has averaged over 30mpg for the past 3k or so miles. It isn't great, but IMO the car is worth it.

done 4k in my 200 cup mixed driving always trip it on tank and av.29 approx, just had price on decent tyres 110 each,if u use it properly most people back off!!!

Bump.

I have covered 880 miles in my 200 cup so far and I am getting 26.6mpg, i mainly do short motorway runs with the mixed 'spirited' driving (lol), is this about right??
I assume once the car has covered 1000miles+ it will get a bit better. I was hoping for 30mpg + for low rev cruising type driving?

Cheers.

Tyres will vary driver to driver and also which tyre your using.

Kick its hole in everywhere expect less than 10k, take it easy, who knows

Thats very true. My dad got 50k out of a set of fronts on his MK5 Fiesta. The rears are still on it from the factory which is like 6 years and about 60K. He drives like a fairy everywhere though so they last literally forever.

Rob, ive also done 800 miles in mine. Im getting around the 30mpg mark atm, varies (im resetting it every few days). Lowest ive had is 28mpg.
With that in mind, I have been driving like a granddad since ive been back at Uni lol.

I generally do short journeys, with the furthest I travel is to Uni which is 16 miles each way.

Is it because you do lots of short journeys or stop start driving? This kills economy :(

If your worried about running costs look into the Alfa mito - 170bhp version and Abarth 500 - 160bhp version similar performance and alot cheaper to run

  Ph1 172 and Red 197
I get on the trip about 26.6mpg.

But I always look at how much I put in for miles covered, light-light. 330miles to a tank.

My 172 used to be about 300 to a tank but the 197 has a gallon more fuel.

I would say both are about the same for me but I hoooned the 172 every where and tyres are about £30 a corner more being 17" and not 15"

On a trip to Uni today, I managed 37mpg... Never thought id ever see such heights!!

Granny it.

I did a round trip of 229 miles exactly today, I was hardly gunning it but not exactly driving like a granny managed 33.6 MPG fairly reasonable but I don't think I'd ever get close to high 30's in this car.

My 172 could get 40MPG if being gentle.

Well...I've had my 200 for 4 weeks and my fuel bill is sitting at just over £600.

Needless to say the 200 will be going shortly. :dapprove:

No!!! thats the thing. I could understand if I was smashing it off the limiter in every gear but I don't!

I'm used to my previous car that done 600 miles to a tank so 250-300 is a bit of a shock!

How? If I pay no attention to how often I use the power the minimum I get usually is 350miles per tank. If I'm deliberately frugal, 400 is easy.
Do you do a lot of town miles?

Edit: although coming from 600miles a tank, even 350 would probably be a shock. No offence intended, but did you not think to consider the mpg before you purchased??

It was on 2.5k last time I looked.

Spoke to the dealer about getting another Leon, gonna see what I can work out as I can't be doin with this lol.

It sits in the drive 4 days of the week too!

Lol

Once I had 400 miles out of my 197, that was the tank brimmed to running on fumes............. was pretty much cruising around with that. Usually I'll get around 350 miles. I only use it for 'pleasure' have a van for work. Probably fill itup every 12 days or so

Kinda yeah, Work in the center of glasgow so when I do drive its in bumper to bumper traffic.
