Do you have any other issues with the car? If not then that error can be probably be ignored.

did have a misfire but changed coilpak and sparks and ht leads. runs so much better now.

right ive found the plastic refill gearbox cap.
how do i put 3litres of oil into the gearbox without the oil coming out?
surely the refill cap should be on top of the gear box?
any ideas?
thanks keith

Drain the box, then refill through that hole and when it starts to dribble out you have filled it to the right level. Make sure the car is flat and level obviously.

is there a tool to get the oil in because its a struggle to get yr hand in to open the cap.?

Drop kick that generic obd reader into the bin, that code is nothing to do with the 172 gearbox

Exactly this, drain the fluid, then use 50cm standard garden hose pipe with a funnel wedged in to it. if the funnel is too big for the hose then put the end of the hose in a cup of boiling water for a minute to soften it.

Get ready with some rags to catch the over spill when pulling the hose out of the filler hole, or just get the plastic butterfly plug back on super quick.

does the clio 172 cup gearbox take 3 litres of oil ???
gear box don't seem big enough.

thanks keith

3.1 ltrs, but realistically it never all drains out so 3ltrs is fine. I will be amazed if you get more that 2.5ltrs out of it as nearly every gearbox has a slight weap at best!!!

I always remove the air box, hoses and un-hook the clutch cable before removing the plug and filling. I have two halfords flexible funnel hoses joined together and one of the funnels for my gearbox oil changes. End of the funnel fits perfectly into the filler hole. Real quick and easy job once you have done it a couple of times and worked out the easiest way to do it.

thanks

i have a 90cm hose with about 15mm end.
which i will stick the funnel in the end will this be ok

Still not GL4 though, search “GL4 GL5” on the forum.

Apparently GL5 is slippier, which isn’t good for the synchros and it’s got additives which corrodes the brass.
I wouldn’t use it and just get the correct oil, just as @bloke has suggested as first comment in both threads:)

just going to use the 75w80 gl5 as people have used it before.
surely its gotta be better then the old oil in there now as not been changed in 10 years.
