clio sport 182 idle limp mode problem fault

  clio sport 182
hi everyone
firslty i have just bought a 04 reg 182 mileage 96000 no history
after buying the car i drove 2 miles and the car went into limp mode
after turning off engine and restarting the car was fine
this has happened a few times roughly 3 in 2 days
went to garage diagnostics showed throttle body fault and throttle position sensor fault
also my engine sounds like a deisel (added oil stabiliser no difference)
it cuts out at low revs usualy when parking seems to be when clutch depressed
also the air filter had been removed prior to sale
i am very unsure about the car and i am hoping that you good people might have some ideas i can try
quick reference to what has happened is below

also i have booked the car in for a tps £150

1 car went into limp mode 3 times in 2 days
2 starts and runs fine after
3 fault on diagnostics throttle position sensor / throttle body
4 sounds like a diesel
5 cuts out when parking usualy when clutch depressed
6 needs high revs to pull off otherwise cuts out
7 air filter not there

thanks

Sounds like there is a few issues there especially the "It sounds like a diesel" and the cutting out at low engine speeds.

Stalling out issues and MIL coming on is *most likely* to be linked to the throttle: IMO, either a wiring issue, a pedal potentiometer issue or a fault with the stepper controlled throttle body. A decent tech with good equipment will be able to suss this one out for you and advise on the best route to repair/resolve.

The "Diesel sounding" engine is a little worrying - Normally, I'd say the dephaser pulley needs replacing but it could be something worse such as bottom end. This NEEDS looking at as the priority IMO and fingers crossed, if the car hasn't got a documented timing belt/dephaser change this is all it needs to cure it. Sort it out fast though before something bad happens thru continuing to drive it - there are loads of reputable traders on here that can sort you out properly for a good price... don't let just anyone have a crack at it based on price as it's not a straight forward, simple job!

I myself have been called out to a couple of so called "Garages" in the Nottingham area to rectify £250 attempts and some now won't even touch them.

exactly what mick says above^^^

your talking a fair bit of money to put it right, if it was my car and had no service history i would be looking at doing

timing belt and kit
aux belt and kit
dephaser pulley
full service including brake fluid, coolant, box oil... etc (the whole lot)
new throttle potentiometer(or whatever needs replacing to sort it out)

and probably loads of other stuff will need doing! and just hope your bottom end is not shagged.

if i was you i would get back in it and take it back to where you bought from and get your money back!!!

could end up costing more than what you paid for the car to put it right.

It depends on what he gave for it I guess... I'd be rate pissy about the lack of an air filter for sure and would be wanting some pound notes back especially if it was there before you took delivery but then it vanished after collection! Service history (or lack of) is just a fail on his part as he could've negotiated/haggled a bit better - we all fail at times though if we're honest.

I don't honestly believe the bottom end is the problem... If I were a betting man (Which I'm not... I've got a missus capable of wasting my money away for me) I'd say its a dephaser pulley at fault but I'd sooner "err on the side of caution" especially if it were my car! lets be honest - A warranted timing belt, dephaser and aux belt setup done right is going to set you back around £550 at least!

hi
thanks for the replys
i paid £1575 for the car after reading about the 182 i knew they would have problems which ever 1 i bought so got one that was in need of some wrk then i know its done
rather than goind on second hand information about the car
the main thing that is bothering me is the noise i took it to a garage all they could say is it sounds cammy what do you think of this
warn cam ?
what does the dephaser pully do ?
do you think the cutting out and erratic idle is due to the throttle position sensor?
thanks
