Clio steering question

Does anybody know how you can tell which type of power steering system you have on a 2001 1.2 16v clio, SMI or TRW? Need a track rod end and Renault need to know which type it is. Had a look but can seen any obvious markings.

Also, do you know if its possible to buy Renault tools(the ones they specify in there workshop manuals)?

cheers

good question! i never knew there were two types, you learn someting new everyday!

is yours electric?

Apparently I've found out Fred some Mk2 2 cars have fluid PAS systems but I've never seen one so maybe this is one but I wouldn't think so.

Cannot help you though finding out best way is to take them off there must be some part marking mine were chnaged under warently so I never looked the parts places normally know as they won't sell one type (as happens with the brakes).
Renault tools are ordered like any part its a 10 digit number all Renault parts have ie 77 01 472 417 is a front wing for a 172 the part number for a inlet camshaft seal for a 172 is 00 00 001 517. Wheather a dealer will sell you the bits is the question they maybe unwilling to sell them.

On the steering question i would say its basiclly asking electric or fluid p/s and yea just order the tools you need from renault they normally start 00 00 ...... should give a selection on the parts computer.

I Think the steering is hydraulic. Still cant seem to find out the type. When Iooking through the dialogys catalogue, there are 2 types. 1 is kinked and seems to have a male threaded end and the other is straight with a female thread and lock nut. The female straight version looks like mine, but it doesn’t say which type it is, just the part number. Don’t want to buy from Renault as they want about £35, can get one from GSF for £13 but they need the type.

Thanks for your help

if you look on the steering rack behind the gearbox theirs a sticker with the part number and it will also have smi or trw written on it.the electric one's that diesels and the 1.2 16v use is the smi rack.as edde said i recently saw a picture of a 1.2 16v with the hydraullic rack.as for the track rod ends yeah theirs two types, one with a nut that locks against the track rod end and one with a nut and bolt, the one's you need will be the one's with the locking nut.give them a good spray with wd40

cheers guys, yes you were right it was an SMI. Finally got under the car properly tonight and noticed on the steering rack as sticker with SMI printed.

Thanks for all your help!

Your have gone and its a 2003 model, im shocked. thought mine was bad being a 2001. I am not very chuffed about the quality of some fasteners used on my car. Some of the fasteners are just rubbish! They are so corroded, they look like they have been on the car for 10 years.
