Your car is going to outrun anything even if you fill it up with raspberry jam mate!

Just stick with the Optimax or similar that you should already be using.

Best talk to BBt about what spec the engine is they can probably make it so it runs fine on 95 Ron 98+ Ron though means they cna run higher boost and hence more power.

bbpt will tell you but i would imagine it will be mapped safe but fairly aggresively on unleaded. Use super to give you a better safety margin as lots of variables affect turbo cars.

Just out of interest, whats the spec and expected boost, bhp levels?

Have you not seen the tiny, tiny bhp gains an engine such as a 172/182 on 98 RON acheives? The oil companies are robbing you blind unless you're running a high end motor; subaru, skyline etc...

Although, generally turbo cars do need a high RON don't they

WTF?

You calling me a hippy? I drive a 172 like I stole it, just aint a fuel snob.

Few engines benefit from an increase in RON :slap:

no worries man,...

never attended a meet or a show, just like my cars and learning about the ones i currently have, hence my involvement here.

It's not a patch on bmwcarclubforum TBH though... Still good though.

98 or tesco 99 all the way!

If you run 95 then you'll run the risk of pinking/detonation which in a turbo engine is baaaaaad... (especially one you've just paid 6k for!! lol)

our sports are mapped to use either 95 or above. My 172 mk2 runs very well and good on 95. I saw a controlled test on the gadget show or something like that, our level of perfomance car (think it was a current Golf GTi) resulted in approx 1 or 2 bhp increase from 98 RON, the difference was only marked when you tried 98 V's 95 in Evo's and Scoobies and would no doubt be essential on certain mapped/turbo'd units.

You know, if it makes YOU feel better or special then carry on using it in your Sport. My mate ONLY uses OPTIMAX in his Mini One,.. makes him feel special, a kind of fuel snob IMO. I've told him countless times his car's ECU is designed to use 95 and above, but hey he likes it.

BUT the question is would you need 98 RON on a highly modifed 260 bhp clio turbo. i would say you NEED to use it otherwise it WILL pink and det it's tits of.

I presume your going be running fairly high compression for a turbo car hence the low boost 6psi or something.. So a high octane fuel and a good map is essential.

Surely it's dependant on the mapping. Some turbos are set to run on 95 RON, but they will probably produce more power if capable of recognising 98 RON.

The guys doing his £6-7k conversion will surely tell him what his car needs

its a must for me if i use any other but op its starts to over boost and run like a dog

95ron fuel is full of crap that doesnt clean or do your engine any good at all! its not about how many bhp extra you get from a different fuel its about response, gear smoothness, MPG, and optimax 98ron is a world apart from the 95 ron s**t that you can buy, for the sake of a few pence more buy something that will clean your engine and will give you better performance and far higher MPG.

The clio sport is 98 ron recommended, anything less doesnt do your car any good, and this is quoted by renault themselves.

Agreed, I have spoken to Renault UK technical help on the phone and they told me not to use 95 RON. Why do they care unless it's not good for my car?

Acceleration just feels a lot smoother and less thrashy with optimax, stick ASDA petrol in it and it feels like I'm hurting then engine when quickly accelerating. Believe me I am no fuel snob at all. I'm a stingey b*****d with my money and I'd use the cheapest petrol around if I didn't think I'd be better off with optimax.

You can guess what the P stands for.
Renault sell the 172 in countires which doesn't have 98Ron fuel so its no hardship running the car on 95 RON.

lol what does that have to do with anything, you dont not sell your car in a country because they dont have 98ron you idiot,it just means those poor souls arent benefiting doesnt change it for others, the fact is the car benefits alot from 98ron as opposed to 95ron.:D

I think youll also find the europeans have a 100ron fuel! which is supposed to coming here and replacing optimax

  BMW Z4 3.0i
We've not been saying that we primarily use optimax for 1/4 mile times. We've been saying we use it because it's recommended by the manufacturer and we can physically feel for ourselves that the 172 runs better with optimax.

It's supposed to run on 98ron but we didn't have that here until recently (tesco 99), yet the manufacturer still puts a 98ron recommendation in the manual as that's the fuel it's designed to use.
