Clunk/Knock from 182

  ClioSport 182

Maybe my ears are becoming more finely tuned, but I have started to hear a clunk/knocking sound from the rear (exhaust?) on my 182. It happens only when:

- Switching engine off (two clunks ...)

- Immediately after taking my foot off of the accelerator at low speed in the lower gears (one clunk)

Anyone else heard this or know what it might be? Probably a normal part of owning a 182, but worth a check.

I get a knock or clunk at low speed, and when I let off the accelerator, but mine sounds like its coming from the front offside suspension. And Ive got a click at the top of the clutch pedal, just as you take your foot off it. And a sticking electric window switch, the one on the drivers side that controls the passenger window. Its booked in 16th October.

I also get a light clunking sound in my 182 as KnightAzul has said - Immediately after taking my foot off of the accelerator at low speed normally when im in 2nd gear (one clunk)...but i have only noticed this when the car is cold.

From inside the car im guessing the sound im hearing is coming from around the rear passenger side suspension?

mine clucks from the front suspension too, not going to book it in, seems most do it so not really worried.

Ive been getting this in my 182 for a while now, Im just going to wait till the service and mention it then

Trying to keep my car away from the dealer for as long as possible!

Dont get any of that with mine. Very occasionally the brakes bind when setting off after its stood for a few days doing nothing, but no clunking.

i get a clunk at low speeds (1st /2nd gear) sounds like an engine mount or maybe suspension - not too worried at the mo!

my exhaust mounts were tightened at forst service as i had a rattle at tick over. the single knock is from front supension and seems normal.........!!!!!!!well normal because they all do it!

Get a clunk changing from 1st to 2nd gear. It doesnt happen all the time though and it seems a little worse when its cold.

I too will leave taking it to Reno for obvious reasons!

I can understand that the clunk/knocking can be attributed to the front suspension when changing gear (1st/2nd) and after taking my foot off of the accelerator at low speed due to the weight transfer involved.

However, switching engine off (two clunks ...) how could this be attributed to the front suspension?

ok, the clunk when taking your foot off the accelerator at low speeds is not normal and can be cured as I had it from new on mine.

Took it to renault and the fixed it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They adjusted the heat shield as it was positioned wrong, then they tightened an engine mount, and finally my exhaust was bowing in the middle which they rectified.

One of these things fixed the clunk, just not sure which one, but at least you know it can be cured and what they can try. I am guessing this is a common problem so they should have a tech note about it.

Good luck guys and get it sorted, so much nicer without it!

Mine does the same gonna leave it till the service unless it gets alot worse, think I may have to ask them to take a look athe climate control as well because unless its wacked up to about 26c doesnt seem to heating up the air, anyone else had this?

I took my 182 in, after having the same clunk on overrun in 1st/2nd.

Apparently, its the zorst touching the heat shield... or something like that.

Hi all again. Mentioned earlier in the thread that my car was booked in for this problem.

Well, it went in and came back, still with the clunking noise. So looks like Im going to have to take it in again.

JAY172 off this forum came out with me, he works there etc. Anyway, think he worked on it, not sure what he did but its still clunking.

my car is going in for 3 days to see if they can fix the problem. I think i might print this page out and give them a copy as it may help them.

mine did this, but i played with the exhaust and it was catching on the heatshield, so when the engine moved (i.e changing gear etc) it pulled/pushed the exhaust forcing it to make contact with the heatshield, i just bent the heatshield a little and hey presto its gone, you can easlily test by pulling and pushing it and seeing what hits what.

Why hasnt Renault acknowledged / fixed this problem.

This has been going on since the 172 MK2 was released. I never had this with the 172 MK1. Surely they can sort this out. Better than having loads of annoyed customers. And it doesnt sound like such a big thing to fix either.

It is, i was told to bring it in for 6k safety check, so i did and they then told me they stopped doing it a "year ago". c**ts!!!

Ive had this - crawling in traffic, for example, in 1st or second, lift off throttle and get single clunk from offside front.

This was duff engine mount - Ive gone thru a couple now - had another fitted yesterday and problem has gone.

The same problem was also linked to 2 or 3 knocks when switching off engine - Ive played around with position of engine mount by sliding the black cup it sits in back and forth (apparently theres an ACTIS note re: clearance issues) and found that this more or less cured problem.

Ive noted that mount fitted yestrday is slightly different to duff one - new design to cure problems ?? Ive spoken to a couple of Reno guys who have said that there was a design issue with this mount and that (surprisingly) there was to be a remedy for it !!?!?

This sounds promising. Perhaps they are starting to take us serious. About time.

Anything official on this remedy ?

Mine goes in for the 3rd time in a couple of weeks. Hopefully theyll let me take them out and show them what I mean. The last two occasions they have carried out the strut top mount fix, which wasnt even an issue on my car!!

Im going to take this forums post in with me. And highlight the solutions which people have posted!! Its in for a mac of 3 days so hopefully that will be enough time to fix it!!

Wow thought I was the only one.... it is the mount then!!!! had it tightened and the noise stopped at crawling speed in 1st n 2nd now only happens when I stop the engine!!! nock nock nock (whos there?) will go back n get it sorted for good!!! ill get them to bend the heat shield aswell just to be safe!!! I will also take this post and ask them to add a tech note on the dealer intranet!! if we all ask they gotta do it!!

I want a new mount!!!

who what dealer game you the new mount? so I can get my dealer to phone through and get some guidence!!!

I use Richard Sanders in Kettering as theyre the most local - theyve never argued the toss over any warranty work (and surprise, surprise, theres been a fair bit !) - but they take several attempts to sort stuff, quite often I end up telling them what needs doing as they seem hopeless at diagnosing faults and a couple of times theyve fixed one problem and either caused another or damaged the car (scuffs on bumper, broken grille) - bloody amateurs.
