Clunking noise from gear change mechanism

My take with these things is that sometimes you just have to put up with these knocks and bangs until something fails catastrophically. I had a knock on my old Cup which annoyed me for a short while, when having a look something metallic dropped. It was a piece of the top mount bearing which someone kindly identified on here.

And we're back....

I managed to get the car up on stands, pratt around with the undertray and get to part of the gear linkage that MAY be the issue. On very good advice the boot of the linkage pin has been packed with grease (as well as I could lying on my back getting covered in the stuff!) with the hope that even if it just dampens the noise I will have found the source of said noise. I'll be driving later so will update....

And the results are in....

It has made a difference to the sound. I'll confirm it over the next few days but although I can still make it clunk it's much harder to do so. Under normal conditions a passenger who doesn't know about this issue wouldn't suspect anything. So when fully confirmed I have a few choices, which are:

1. Leave it as it is and occasionally put a bit more grease into the boot should it need it.
2. Find a really thick grease and put that into the boot after removing the current stuff (its some kind of worm drive grease in a tube which I have for some unknown reason).
3. Replace the pin in the hope that it is that which is worn and not the opening it sits in (I think both will be worn if they are made of the same material)
4. Replace the pin and shifter arm which is a gearbox out job but would solve the issue.

So I found this old thread on here about a similar issue ...

The item I hopefully need to replace is item 10, probably item 11 (the boot) and 30 (is that some kind of bush?) I may need another little bush that has the circlip (mine is new from last year so maybe it's ok).

Item 10 seems to come in many many forms. What is the correct size/part number for a 172 Cup JC5-129 box linkage? Is it this?....

And the brass bush that @plees supplies.....mine is new but should I get another new one or does the selector rod come with a new one installed?

Questions, questions.....but this is the last "WTF is that noise?" issue I have on my Cup.

Why are you so bothered? How loud is it?
It's really annoying. Even though everything is tight on the car this loose sound ruins it for me. If you're thinking i'm a bit anal about this then you are right. I really don't like loose noises when driving....even in a Cup :ROFLMAO:

It wasn’t that loud when I heard it, but was noticeable under certain driving conditions. Almost like a peg was loose and rattling around in a hole.
Yeah, we are sure it’s the ball on the selector pin that is worn but it’s probably also worn the hole it sits in.
