Cobra 2-1 alarm

My local alarm specialists seem to know what they are talking about...except that they disagree with each other completely!

So I thought Id ask you guys instead. I dont HAVE to have a Thatcham alarm for my Clio and Direct Line wont reduce my policy (tight gits) if I get one but I figure it would be better because a) its probably a better alarm and b) I may get a discount elsewhere when I renew. I was thinking about a 2:1 upgrade that uses the key and doesnt need a new remote.

Dealer1 said: Get a Clifford Arrow. They arent Thatcham and they arent an upgrade but you get a single circuit immobiliser (why I need one when the car has one already thats Thatcham 2 I dont know). He recommended a Microwave sensor and it came to 300 quid fitted with window closure module. Now from what I know of alarms from when I worked for BMW microwaves were designed for vans and convertibles?

Dealer2 said: Get the Cobra 2:1 upgrade and ultrasonics. You get an insurance certificate and the system uses the original Reno key. Window closure and electronic tilt and it comes to 380 all in. He also said that the Cobra alarms were Renault approved and said Microwave was no good because internal coverage was not as good.

Im inclined to believe Dealer 2, oppinions please 1, 2 or shoudl I go elsewhere for something else altogether?

Id go to Dealer 2.

But for that sort of money, Id get a new cat 1 cobra alarm fitted. And have the original one removed/disconnected.

There are some right bargins around at the min...............

Thanks guys. Im in Leeds, W.Yorks. I had a look around but those prices seem to be about right round here. Can you recommend anywhere thatll fit the alarm in my area?

Im getting the Cobra 2:1 upgrade on my car on Wednesday. Its costing about £230, but it doesnt have the window closure (I dont think I need that anyway, I can remember to close my own windows)

The alarm fitter told me that the upgrade makes the system Cat 1, as the immobiliser is already Cat 2.

Sounds right. Im getting closure and tilt sensors. The alarm itself was 270. Sixty for closure and 50 for electronis tilt sensor. Having it fitted Friday. Watch me get broken into on Thursday night !

Yeah - I know the feeling..just one more night to wait for me..

Ive had to park it round the corner, I bet its not there in the morning!

Now Im wondering if I should have got the tilt sensors, but as I cant always park outside my house I dont want it going off at 2am in the next street!

The factory immobiliser will stop it running away, I wanted the alarm for the ICE and in case of vandals. I got tilt to look after the alloys and in case anyone tried to tow it.

Wih regard to tilt I wouldnt worry abouit false alarms, the electronic tilt they use now basically calibrates at arming and if the angle of the car changes by 1 degree for more than one second it goes off. If a bus or whatever rocks the car it wont activate because it is rocking about, so the angle is gonna be going up and down rapidly. Basically will only go off if the car is jacked or if say someone sat on the wing.

You can probably add it later anyway if you want it.

All done - £235 and I think theyve done a really good job.

He said I can have the tilt fitted later if I want to for £80, but he said if the cars lifted up the alarm would go off anyway.

I can sleep a bit safer at night now!

Sleep well mate, only tonight and tomorrow for me...Ill sleep at the weekend lol. Actually Im off to get p*ssed in Scarborough so maybe not :D.

Sounds like your all set, not sure that jacking the car up is going to set the alarm off if you havent got a tilt sensor tho...? But like he said you can have it added if u want.
