They keep dirt out generally. I use them in combination with ACF-50 or Corrosion block. Double protection.
You want to give everything a good clean after winter though or if you've accidently crashed into a field...

Took mine off after a year or so the other month:

100% worth it.

As above, use some sort of grease/corrosion inhibitor to protect against trapped moisture and make sure that the bottom velcro of the sock doesn't sit on any important threads as, if anywhere was going to corrode, that's where it would be.
