Coilover help spring rate/length (rally boys)

  172 Cup
First time I have had coilovers so got a couple questions on setting them up properly. I Fitted the Bilstein's this weekend and had a play with ride height, I want it sitting quite high as its a road rally car so need some decent ground clearance. However I found the higher you wind the collar the more you preload the spring and It looks like they may bind as they are. As I would like it sitting slightly higher than standard would I be better off getting a longer spring 9"? (The standard spring is 6" plus the helper.) Would this reduce the amount of preload and possible binding? I also think they need to be slightly softer, I am thinking 65N/mm.
The rears feel fine.
Any help appreciated before I go and spend more money on springs. Cheers Ed.
