Coilovers for 182

Are GAZ the only ones available, people do not seem to rate them that highly on here.

I want to get some and would be willing to pay the £750 for H&R but these are not available for the 182.

Does anyone know of anything in the pipeline? I do not want to buy the GAZ ones and a month later the H&R become available.

Hi mate, it looks very unlikely that many companies will be making kits to fit the 182 due to end of production and lack of motorsport participation. If the 182 was going to be in production for the foreseeable future and be used in the cup series then motorsport companies would be commissioning kits to be made up but unfortunately thats not the case.

However, YozzaSport have been developing a kit with Bilstein i believe and it should be ready fairly soonish although prices will be more than H&R, FK, GAZ etc due to the quality and design...think they are aiming it at trackday enthusiast or perhaps even competitive motorsport participants rather than regular fast road.

LEDA (considered the best by most) have a kit available i believe but prices are not cheap but if youre serious then these or the bilstein/yozzasport kit will be the ones to go for.

As for the GAZ kit, well i am running them on my 182 and they performed well on a nice smooth track although they seem a little harsh for regular road use but this may be down to the spring rate im currently running.

It all comes down to money at the end of the day.....you get what you pay for. GAZ only cost £500, the other options will be well in excess of a grand. Your choice mate. :) Hope that helps.

Thanks for that GaryG. I was hoping someone with the GAZ kit on there 182 would give an opinion.

I have contacted Andy at GDI who says he can supply the GAZ kit with different rate springs, he recommended 200lbs. I think the £1000+ kits are a bit out of my price range, although like you say you get what you pay for.

Hopefully I will get it setup professionally by Northampton Motorsport but need to confirm a price.

unless hes put 172 hubs on, i find that hard to believe

I had GAZ coilovers on the 172 and couldnt rate them enough for £500. I just didnt see that id benefit anymore spending the extra £250 for H&Rs and am glad i didnt.

I have just bought another set for the willified valver which are yet to be tested.

Ordered the GAZ ones from KTEC (cheaper then GDI).

Specced the 200lb springs but when I spoke to KTEC they said it would just be the fronts that would be changed the back ones would remain at 250lbs.

Has anyone got this setup? Will it work?

NO. Reduce the rear spring rate to circa 170-180lbs otherwise you may find the car to be tail happy. BTW not sure on GDIs current prices but i find K-Tec £20 more expensive?

It did seem strange to me to have a higher rate spring at the back of the car, which is lighter.

When I phoned KTEC he assured me this would be OK (as standard they are 225 front and 250 rear).

What are the spring rates on yours loony?

GaryG same question.

I will call KTEC again tommorrow to confirm options.

GDI quoted me 80£ more then KTEC.

Mine were £500 from GDI mate, Ktec have them priced at £520? I know that prices may have changed due to manufacturing costs tho.

Anyways....my car is on 225lbs springs at the front and 250lbs at the back, good for track use but not for road....i will be changing to signifcantly lower rate springs asap!

Ah right, did you mention Clio Sport? May just be down to the increase in manufacturing cost tho.

Make sure you dont get the 250lbs springs at the rear!

Spoken to KTEC today who contacted GAZ about spring rates.

They have advised 200lb front and 225lb rear.

The explanation for the higher rated rears is that they are not positioned at the pivot point of the suspension therefore are subjected to a greater force when the suspension compresses. Also note 200lb is standard for the rear.

2-3 weeks wait + 20£ extra for the custom rears.

Garys situation is different, he has next to nothing in his car, especially the rear, there is substantially less weight.

What we need to do is to run a COMPARATIVELY softer rear than the fronts. Spring rates used differ between front and rear because, like pointed out, the position they are relative to the suspension pickup points (pivots) affects the WHEEL rates which is what we are actually trying to control. The rears need to have higher SPRING rates to acheive the same WHEEL rate as the fronts because they are CLOSER, not further, to the pivot point of the rear axle, this have a larger moment input on them.

The GAZs are massively over sprung from facotry and the car bounces all over the shop, not letting the dampers do anything, and everybody winds up the dampers to stop it pogoing, and then its just too stiff for the road.

But suspension is personal preference, so everybody will be happy with different things at the end of the day.

Ok so my car is currently running the following spring rates; 225lbs front and 250lbs rear....if i reduce both by 16% i get approx 190lbs front and 210lbs rear. Then based on the assumption of my car being very light at the rear i should try 200lbs springs instead of 210. Make sense? God cars are complicated lol.

[Edited by Gary G on 15 August 2005 at 2:32pm]

However, running the rears stiffer might mean i achieve equal wheel rates front and back and could induce excessive oversteer??

Gary your right whod have thought it would be so complicated.

Maybe we should send GAZ the bill for developing there suspension kit for the 182 as they obviously havent bothered!

so how do you know the spring rate then? i used to have a gaz kit on me 172 cup, now have h&r, what rates are these front and rear, be very interesting to know.......

So whats advisable for a full-fat 182 cup...

... which does 30,000 miles a year?

PS Std shocks are already knakkered (running eibach sportline springs, and the cars gone all bouncy castle).

Yozzasport have comissioned Bilstein to make some ;o)

Gaz, mine has labels on the springs, fyi 172 spring rates are the same. H&R fronts are apparently 150newton something or other lol...try working that out into pounds per inch :-s

The people you buy it off, or the manufacturer should be able to tell you.
