compelte mystery!!!

Rite, im sorry about posting about this again but im completely bamboozled....

Problem: my car wont start- and its not the battery!

could it be the starter motor? - unlikely because if it was the SM then with lights full beam on my car and then starting the car, the lights would dim. (got that from the haynes manual)

could it be the solenoid? - unlikely because if it was then i wouldnt hear any clicks, and i an hear clicks.

this has got me completly bamboozled and the haynes manual doesnt offer any other help other than to check the electrics, which is something i really really dont want to do as its really fiddly.

i dont really want to take it to the mechanics becoz im sure theyll fob me off and also my car aint movin which means itll cost me to get it towed up there!

please please please help me with any other suggestions as i really miss driving my car and cant mod it any further until i can get it to moooove!!!!

thanks in advance greg

I would guess from what info you have giving that it is infact the starter motor that is faulty, if your headlights are not dimming then no current is getting to the starter motor. or the starter motor is unable to use the current.

hmm, my money was on the starter motor as well.... but after reading the haynes manual, got me confused.

says "If the lights dim then this indicates that current is reaching the starter motor, therefore the fault lies in the starter motor"

surely if the lights dont dim thean current isnt reaching the starter motor and there is a fault elsewhere?!!

could it be the ignition module??

help!!!!

one confused clio owner

lol KDF, rang em up but they were otherwise engadged dealing with the guy sabotaging the design of the 2004/5 clios......

damn those meddling kids...

rite, ive had an idea, it could be that the starter motor is sticky/ jarred and just needs a good tap with a crowbar or summin. i no the starter motor is near the gearbox, but a picture of it would help me a lot and would mean i can stop spamming the forum about my damn starter motor.

Mate, Have you had a look at the distributer cap. I had the same thing on my old 1.4RT and it was because the distributer cap had cracked

i really doubt its the distributor cap cos the car had its 54k service 2 weeks ago, and i took the car back 3 days later and i think he had a look at the cap.

cheers anyway george

Try putting the car in gear and pushing it forward or backward just a bit... kind of rock it to move the gear ring around a bit... then try starting it.I had this a few times for some reason the starter motor just jambed (not on my 172)... it sorted itself out after a while.

distributor cap is not a serviceable pert, that is they dont have to replace it.

get a push start from your mates, if it gos then you know to look at the starter motor i reckon, mine went, very tricky job on the valver so got a garage to do it.

£78 for the part from french and german and 1 1/2 hours garage time.

Clean all the earth bonding straps and check that the wires on the solenoid / starter motor are done up tight. Be very careful not to let the spanner / wrench touch anything as you could ground the battery out (not good). You would be best to disconnect the battery first for safety reasons. Also remove any rings / watch as well.

cheers for all your help guys. yea scotty me and my mate push started it, took it to the garage and its deffo the starter motor, they cleaned it up and checked all the connections free of charge and the car was starting fine.....for about the next few hours. Once again its back on my drive and im gonna have to push start it back up there- 150 quid fitted, not the cheapest price but a hell of a lot cheaper than renault fitting it!!!!
