Computer sluggish need help

  Audi S3 225
My comp is only a few months old, I’ve upgraded it a bit as well, thing is about a week ago it’s started going really sluggish. I ran that 3dmak pro benchmark and on the CPU tests it was going at like 3fps!!!!!!! Also it takes much longer to start up now and once all the icons are loaded I still have to wait like 20 secs to be able to do anything, when before rebooting took like 20 secs all together!

I’ve checked the fans and they are fine at idle it’s running at around 40C, I have a fan on the HDD as well and that’s running at 25C according to Speedfan 4.27. Even under heavy loads it doesn’t go that high so I no it’s nothing to do with temp. Games run fine though.

I’ve done a full virus scan with AVG and have the latest updates, same with adaware and spybot. I’ve checked under msconfig and have just AVG starting up.

I think that maybe the new ram I fitted has something to do with this; are there any decent programs to check for errors, or even a decent one to check for errors on the HDD or CPU?????? I need to find out what the problem is. Oh and the HDD is almost full I have 51 gig left could this be a problem?

Spec - p4 3.6, 2gig, 250 Sata HDD, ATI x1800xt 512, winxp sp2

Thanks, sorry for the long post

Allan

cpu tests on 3dmark do get like 3fps. try it on 3dmarkk06 be lucky if you get 1 i had over 5ghz of cpu power on a dual core going into the test and it only managed 1fps for a short time its normal because the graphics card is rendering nothing at all.

Boot up times will slow down if you have installed programs and there are now icons on the taskbar such as virus scanner etc it has to load those programs up as well when it starts thus slowing it down sounds fairly normal to me mate.

When your comp start press ctrl alt delete how many processes have you got running. In comparison i have played about with mine and have 16 nything less and i start loosing things i use daily you can get it lower though. Usually has 26 - 40+ though. which slows it down.

hard drive being full wont be an issue but might be worth defragging it.

Yo thx for the reply dude, I don’t have anything loaded at startup only AVG, I removed this so I have basically nothing loading now and it’s a little better. Im glad the 3dmark 06 problem is normal I was well shocked when this happened, thinking about it i think i did get like 1fps!!! I’m going to try a defrag like you said, I wouldn’t be surprised if the HDD is fragmented as I’ve installed so many new games, Doom3, Quake4, COD2, BF2, HL2, FEAR, NFSMW plus I’ve uninstalled quite a lot of software and games as well. Ill defrag and post back if it’s any better

Thanks

AVS and Adaware etc only picks some things up, try using a prog called hijackthis to unload unwanted BHO's etc

As careful as you can be you pick up all sorts of crap on the web nowadays, every weekend I schedule both my pc's to run AVS and all anti spyware as well as doing a defrag to keep them running as good as the day I bought them.

Limewire tends to be a system choker too....

ok.....im so close to throwing this bloody computer out the window ist doing my fudging nut!!!! Its all going downhill now,

To boot to the background it takes 1m 30 secs, from there for the icons and avg to load and to be able to do anything it takes a further 1m 20 secs! even with avg off it makes hardly a difference.

Like i said i could turn comp on and within probably 30 secs i could be using it, Wtf is going on!

And to add on top of all the other problems i tried to do a full virus scan and a defrag and both made the computer restart. When i look in msconfig/startup its leaves this 'dumprep 0 -k'

I dont know what to do, i just tried to unrar a 800 meg file and it took almost 5 mins!

Any ideas

I have a fast computer at work (3.2Ghz P4 HT etc etc) and it can take me longer than 5mins to unrar/unzip a file that size.
Get a program called 'Advanced Startup Manager' and install that (you can download it) and it tells you all the programs windows is trying to load on start up. you can disable the ones you dont want to load. I did this by turning off quicktime, itunes helper, steam etc and my computer boots up quite fast now :)

If im extracting numerous rar files say a film or something and its around 700megs its done in less than a minute for me usually.

search for hijackthis on the web, download, run, save results as a text file in the program, email me the text file and I'll have have a butchers if it helps.

You got any USB devices... a scanner perhaps?

My scanner added an extra 5 seconds at least to my boot time. I leave it unplugged now until I need it. My other half has a USB graphics tablet which again adds a good few seconds to the boot process.

Why not just leave your pc on then you won't have to boot as often?

have to ask this, but have you been running p2p apps? these really slow down the pc as they open up ports etc.
try running msconfig from the run command, see if anything stands out.

Hi Allan, any joy yet? spotted a couple of things in the log but nothing major, and a couple of things to check out, did you get chance to see what they were?

Hi John, thanks for the help I emailed you back, unfortunately it hasn’t fixed the problem, thanks for trying appreciate it.

Stuart.Atkinson - Hi, I only rarely use Limewire Pro, but only if I hear a good song on TV or radio. It’s never on more than half hour a day, if that. I use msconfig all the time, most of the time I have it empty except AVG and ctfmon. I also use Newsbin v5 for my newsreader but I’ve been using that for ages without problems.

ViolentJ - Hi, I haven’t got any devices like a scammer or USB graphics tablet only a printer that I have left unplugged and it’s still the same.

Munday - thanks I use msconfig instead of ‘Advanced Startup Manager’ as it’s built into windows and I find it easier to use.

Any other ideas guys, thanks for the help so far?

OMG!!!!!!!!! i think i fixed it, i used system restore and went back to 3rd Feb and i seem to have got the speed back, it booted up in half the time.

problem is what the hell has happened to all my files and software etc that were installed after this time, i got an error at startup about AVG. all the files are there but the shortcuts on desktop and in startbar have gone, plus the files i had moved are back in there old folders! Dam it!

im worried system restore might have mucked up the system, think its ok?
