right this is going to sound really strange but im my local forum there is a detailer on there and he says

We only recommend you polish the car no more than once every 18 months, to avoid thinning the lacquer to a point where it loses it's protective properties.

i questioned it and he sed this is for hand polish!:S

wot do you recon detail pros?!?!?

Rubbish! Using a paint depth guage you can safety polish your car as much as you please. Hand polishin doesn't yield the best results and as far as damaging the clearcoat goes, you'd have to be using a dry compound.

To be frank tho, you should only 'need' to polish your car twice a yr, providing it's done correctly in the first place!

Is this local detailer polish? lol

i dont have a clue wot hes going on about here!

You make polishing sound bad, in reality it isn't. Have you ever observed a car be resprayed? They use wet and dry sandpaper by hand on what looks to be perfectly fine paintwork, just to get that extra better result, to the normal person this is shocking to see, but when used properly doesn't cause any damage.

i asked him if he was on about pc'ing a car once every 18 mths not hand polishing and he came back with this

"PC'ing" a car is a term used in alot of places online. That's machine polishing from the use of a Porter Cable or Porter Cable'ing. That's a random orbital.

You also have a rotary polisher which i use, you tend to get better results but takes more time using a rotary.

The best route is to only machine polish a car once. Hand polish every 18 months, if need be.

There are also techniques out there that can be used for regular washing that can minimise damage being inflicted to the paint for a re-polish to even be needed.

do you think hes a good sales man!!!

Rotary will give better results, alot harder to use and required a bit more skill. It's a different polishing discipline really.
And i suppose he's accurate with the last comment.

No sure about the polishin once every 18months and also the 'only once' for the rotary. Many people on maintainance plans, get regular top ups to the initial correction.

im sure the company offers some kinda maintanence contract aswell.

Some things he mentions are true but some are a touch odd.

As to only machine polishing a car once would leave alarm bells ringing into how much clearcoat he is removing in one polishing session.

I am hurt by the Kosovan comment ....

but the way he made it out it sounded like it was a bad thing to polish ur car more than once every 18 mths

All depends on how aggressive a polish is being used. You could safely use a mild polish such as Super Resin Polish by machine on a polishing pad every week if you wanted to.

I machine glaze mine frequently. 6in pad. No cut. Reet!

proper explanation:

Most, if not all polishes require friction & heat to break down and work.

When there's friction but no heat your pretty much hypothetically rubbing gravel onto the bodywork of your car and unless you got arms of The Hulk with stamina to match, your not really using the polish your applying to the paint correctly.

Such regular polishing will eventually lead to the lacquer failing. The fade on red cars is an example of this happening. This is probally why they have to polish so frequently, as it has turned into a viscous circle when put in the wrong hands.

Or it sounds like those people are not washing their cars the way they should and are inflicting a fair bit of damage to the paint to require polishing twice a year.

Keep in mind this is what it appears to be from the info given as i don't know what products and/or techniques they use.

LOL - The fade on red cars has nothing to do with most of them fading due to over polishing. Older red cars oxidise/fade because they have no lacquer to stop it, newer cars fade due to the UV rays from the sun effecting the pigment of the basecoat through the clear lacquer.

  A slow one :-(
Eh... a red faded car is due to oxidisation. The way to cure that is to give it a polish. Red corsas etc don't have a clear coat!

He needs to be pointed to DW... might get a shock!

so true but hes one of them that can talk himself out of a paper bag so im not going to keep questioning him because then he will loose even more business spesh if its a girl questioning him!!! lol

Yeah, basically trying to tell you stuf that isn't strictly true. If he thinks it is then he isn't the pro he thinks he is!

Almost as bad as that guy that told Pinky he was doing her a massive favour doing her car with his clay which cost £100!!!
