Cool video of aux belt tensioner during a drag run

Bloody hell didn't realise it would get such a battering on the limiter.
 
When you see it move on the way up the rev range its because the bottom pulley is trying to move faster than the other pulleys are so it moves all the tension of the belt, when it is decelerating the opposite happens and it moves the other way, so on the limiter where your car is accelerating for a couple of revolutions then decelerating for a couple of revolutions it wildly flails back and forwards as a result.

Just one example of why sitting on the limiter is bad, if you imagine the way the crank is flexing at the same time you can picture why bearing life can be adversely effected etc too.
 
Yes the cambelt/chain will do a similar thing.
Probably a big part of why a lot of 172 fail to make it to their 5 year / 72K interval

Are belts as prone to stretch as chains Chip? I assume there's a bit more "stretch" in a belt
 
This the reason for 'soft' limiters then I guess?

Soft limiters can help in some respects, but actually can be dangerous in other ways when they are fuel cut ones especially on tuned engines, its far from ideal on a turbo car for example to be introducing elements of fuel cut if you now have a much bigger turbo that works right upto the limiter, it can actually do more harm than good to be causing lean conditions.
