Maz - I had exactly the same on my '54 plate too. Took it to Reno after it creaked like a biatch on full lock (especially turning left) and they sorted it out as being, and I quote 'a technical fault'.
They would give me no details as to the work that had been done, what was involved or anything. Whatever they did, it worked. If they gave me more details, I could have let you know what to tell them!

LOL-Mine does it aswell on my 172 Full Lock, sounds like and old Metro with the Hydragas Suspension!
Where's the creaking coming from? If it's from the steering column it's a switch which they will replace, as I had that on my 172. If it's elsewhere then it's anybodies guess. lol
It's not your eyes they'll want to see fluttering.

Mine used to do that.
Since I've changed the springs and wheels, it doesn't do that anymore.
Anyways... it's just a creak, which they all have: nothing to worry about.
It's just metal rubbing (see pic below, where paint has worn-out):

Copper-slip will get rid of it, IMO.
Just undo the top, and grease where you've spotted rubbing.

Sounds right that m8 - the creaking sound on mine did sounder higher up.
adtmits - it was Renault Bury m8 - and I know what you're saying!.....

Dont think its top strut on 182 mate, cos this was sorted on that 182 phase. The top strut is a 172 issue. Also top strut would knock ubder harsh acceleration/loss of traction

Again, bizzarely a new set of wheels / springs / and a shedload of grease stopped it all.
