Cruise Not Working

I viewed a 55 plate 182 today on 41k miles. All in order except the cruise control won't activate. The limiter and cruise lights come on (green and orange) but just shows 'set ---' and won't activate via the +/- buttons.

Is this likely a dodgy connection at the buttons or something more complicated such as a sensor somewhere?

Any estimates as to rough cost for parts/labour would be good as we agreed to reduce the price whatever the cost of the fix would be.

Thanks,

BennyC

without more details, no, you probably wont get an answer of worth.

buying private or from a garage? If the latter, get them to fix it. If Cruise COntrol is part of the advertised particulars, they will have to

do the lights stay on or just on while you press the switch? Do you remember if the switch stayed in position or went back to the middle when you let go? If the switch isn't staying in position its a 5 minute fix.

Hi guys Ive just bought a 182 and the cruise switch doesnt stay in position..... how easy is this 5 min fix and what do you do?!:)

Very easy to do mate, unfortunately not that easy to explain but here goes:
Remove the switch by pushing the panel with the cc switch, tc switch and dial out from behind then clipping the cc switch. Once you have the switch prise the plastic rocker off (the bit you actually press).
Underneath this at the top and bottom there are little metal v shaped springs which hold the switch in each position. Bend these so the angle is a little smaller (they stick out more). I just did this by pushing one end with a little screwdriver. This should mean they catch the rocker better and hold it in position when the switch is put back together.

Will hopefully be more obvious what I mean when you give it a go.

Hi Mike, cheers for your help, luckily I found a thread explaining it just like you have and I managed to do it earlier, it the first thing ive fixed ever in my life!!haha. really pleased now as I feared a heafty bill coming my way! Cheers again this forum is very helpful:)

From memory the previous owner had checked & swapped the pedal sensors but was yet to check the power to the buttons on the steering wheel. Which would either leve a gearbox or speed sensor.

I have noticed a slight scoring feel through the brake pedal sometimes and under harsh breaking it can feel a bit jittery.

Does this sound like a cracked ABS ring? which would well be causing the cruise not to activate. I know the previous owner changed the front discs to brembo HC's so I suspect he might have damaged something or it could well have popped of it's own accord.

Any idea how much parts & labour would be? I plan to have a service done in the next few weeks so will have it sorted then.

I have dropped the car in for a service and asked them to have a look to see if they could identify the problem. Diagnostics hasn't returned anything at all. They were suggesting it could well be the buttons or a connection there.

I can use a guide to get the steering wheel off myself and see if I can spot anything, I'm fairly competant and could fit new parts myself (New buttons were £52 plus an hours labour) assuming £60ish. They said the next step after this is to look deeper in to wiring which could get expensive.

The previous owner seemed surprised, not sure if I believed him, when it wasn't working on the test drive as it had worked when he bought it.
